Meet Lucas: we chat with 29Metals newly appointed Group Manager Geology Lucas Williams

Last week 29Metals announced the appointment of Lucas Williams to the role of Group Manager Geology. We caught up for a chat with Lucas and this is what he had to say…

On his work experience prior to commencing at Golden Grove…

I grew up in Victoria. As a kid I was always interested in volcanoes, so it perhaps seems pretty inevitable that I ended up studying Geology. I went to university in Tasmania and then picked up work at Rosebery, an underground polymetallic base metal mine. From there I transferred to Golden Grove in 2011.

So you’ve been at Golden Grove for 12 years, tell us why it still excites you?

First of all, the people. It’s a really friendly site and everyone is very welcoming. It’s been this way for the whole time I’ve been here.

And secondly, the rocks are incredibly interesting. For a geologist there is always something exciting to work on, it’s one of the reasons why our geologist have long tenures onsite. It’s a fabulous opportunity to study interesting rocks within a supportive and strong culture.

How has your career at Golden Grove developed to lead to your appointment as Group Manager Geology?

In my time here I’ve had plenty of opportunities to take on new roles and have worked across underground, mine geology and exploration. It’s provided me with a full suite of pathways and development opportunities.

What are your priorities in your new role?

In the near term we’re looking at restarting exploration drilling at Mammoth at Capricorn Copper. We’ll have the rig up there shortly and will be commencing drilling in the next few weeks.

In the medium term we’re working through the budget and work plans for next year, prioritising where we’ll put our focus and efforts across the portfolio. Exciting times ahead.

And when you’re not on site?

My priority is spending time with my family, including my two kids. My five-year old daughter is showing a keen interest in geology and often arrives home from school with a backpack full of rocks to show me. Fast forward fifteen years and she may be joining me here.
