Meet Kognitiv's Vishmi Ranasinghe
We're lucky to have a lot of talented and inspiring women at Kognitiv, who have a significant impact on our people and our company. On?#InternationalWomensDay2023 , a few of them shared some thoughts related to gender equity with our team, and we want to share those with you throughout the week.
Here's what? Vishmi Ranasinghe , Lead, QA Engineer had to say.
Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8th to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, as well as to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles for gender equality and women's rights. It's a day to celebrate the contributions of women in all spheres of life, including in the workplace, politics, education, healthcare, and the arts.
Celebrating International Women's Day is essential because it helps raise awareness of the continuing challenges that women face worldwide, including gender inequality, discrimination, and violence. Acknowledging these issues,?can inspire action and progress towards achieving gender equality and improving the lives of women and girls everywhere.
Overall, International Women's Day serves as a reminder that gender equality and women's rights are essential for a just and equitable society, and we must continue to work towards achieving them.
In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges faced by women in the workplace?
Work-life balance: Balancing work and family responsibilities can be particularly challenging for women, who are more likely to take on caregiving roles at home.

Lack of representation in leadership roles: Women are underrepresented in leadership positions in many industries, which can make it more difficult for them to advance in their careers.
Why do you think diversity in the workplace is so important?
Improved decision-making: Diverse teams are less likely to suffer from groupthink, which can lead to better decision-making and outcomes. Better problem-solving: Diverse teams are often better at solving complex problems because they can approach problems from multiple angles and perspectives.
Who are some women that you look up to, and why?
My mother, sister and female colleagues. It’s always important to have supportive friends and mentors who can help guide us through our personal and professional journeys. Having educated women as role models can also provide valuable insights and perspectives that can help us grow and develop as individuals. It's important to cherish and maintain these relationships, and to also pay it forward by supporting and mentoring others who may be in need of guidance and inspiration.
What advice would you give to young women who are just starting their careers?
Self-confidence is essential for achieving success in life. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, you are more likely to take on challenges, pursue your goals, and overcome obstacles. Acknowledge your strengths.?Everyone has unique strengths and abilities. Take the time to recognize and acknowledge yours. It could be a talent, a skill, or a personal quality that you possess. Write them down and remind yourself of them regularly.
