?? Meet Julia Love, a Duke Alum Making Waves in Journalism

Julia Love , a Duke University graduate (B.A. in English, Spanish, and Creative Writing, Magna Cum Laude, 2011), has carved out a prominent career in technology journalism. Her formative years at The Chronicle, Duke's student newspaper, laid the foundation for a career marked by impactful storytelling.

?? Career Highlights:

  • Julia currently covers Google and Alphabet for Bloomberg in San Francisco, delving into the intricacies of technology and its impact on society.
  • Julia's notable investigations include coverage of Carlos Slim's business empire and the exploitation of telecommunications by Mexican cartels.

?? Q: What do you miss most about 301 Flowers? A: "There's so much I miss! I love the physical space - the gently sloping walls that make you feel like you're working in an attic, the views of the Chapel, the relics from past volumes. It's no wonder that I did some of my best writing there. And of course, I miss all the wonderful friends I made!"

??? Q: How did The Chronicle influence your life and career? A: "I owe so much of my career to The Chronicle. I wrote stories that helped me land my first journalism internships, which I leveraged to secure my first full-time jobs. I've been a professional journalist for more than a decade now, but I really trace it all back to The Chronicle."

?? Q: Can you share about someone from The Chronicle who had a lasting impact on you? A: "Chelsea Allison, who edited the volume I was most intimately involved in, became a wonderful mentor and friend. She recruited me to serve as an editor, a role that I hadn't initially envisioned for myself, and I grew so much as a result. She's also one of the finest writers I know, and reading her features in The Chronicle helped me see just how beautiful news writing can be. We reunited on the staff of a legal newspaper in San Francisco shortly after graduation, and she remains a friend and ally to this day."

?? Q: What advice would you give to our current members of the staff? A: "Work hard and don't forget to have fun! The Chronicle is a great place to grow as a writer and explore your curiosities. I reported from the Duke Lemur Center, a Christmas tree farm, the infamous lacrosse team party house, and Shooters II. I'll never have more fun being a journalist."
