Can you share a glimpse of your world with us?
Jessica: A real glimpse of my world is quite the question! The reality of this question is - every day is something new, different and surprising! While some days shine brighter than others, the overall journey has been immensely rewarding. I simply yearn to be fully immersed in every facet of life. Parenting is undeniably demanding, yet it stands as my most gratifying role. Frequently, I'm asked how I manage everything. My approach is simple: I tackle each day with a sense of fun and take life one step at a time. Early on, as a single parent, I recognized the importance of building a supportive community around us. This intentional "village" allowed us to thrive despite our unique circumstances. Communication became our cornerstone—my son and I collaboratively prioritized events and nurtured our relationship. In our whirlwind of activities, outsourcing became a lifesaver. I harnessed resources like house cleaning services and delivery apps, enabling us to focus on cherished moments and shared activities. Amidst the flurry of sports practices and events, dinner remained our anchor—a precious time to reconnect. Recently, my world underwent a massive shift. My son embarked on a new journey, securing a basketball scholarship in Texas. While distance alters how we communicate,? I cherish every interaction. Guiding him toward independence in his new phase is my current mission. Reflecting on the past, I recall initial apprehensions, but with perseverance and an unwavering support system, I embraced the journey fully. Our home became a haven of love and laughter, resilient to challenges. This dedication has proven extraordinarily fulfilling. Gratitude fills my heart for the support from Verizon and PACT, the flexibility granted by my leaders, and the ability to balance exercise, social interactions, and motherhood.
I tackle each day with a sense of fun and take life one step at a time.
How do you celebrate Parent and Caregiver’s Month?
Jessica: Cheers to ya’ll! This year is a little different for me. This month, I’m really celebrating all the parents that are releasing their children into the wild! I’m being intentional about connecting with my fellow empty nesting mothers and going through all these emotions together. These new connections with moms experiencing similar emotions have given me a new perspective and overwhelming hope for this new chapter of life.?
What is the most common misconception you’ve found about being a parent or caregiver?
Jessica: A common misconception surrounding parenting and caregiving is the notion of a one-size-fits-all experience. The reality is that every situation and child is distinct. Parenting approaches vary widely in effectiveness. Embrace what suits your family's needs instead of conforming to the world’s expectations.?
If you could leave one piece of advice to the people reading this, what would it be?
Jessica: Always be a soft place for your child to land. Mistakes are inevitable, and some decisions might hurt. Don't take it personal. Don't be afraid to show your emotions or have hard conversations- these moments are more impactful and memorable than you think. You’re a parent or caregiver, but you are also you, so don't lose yourself in the process! In order to gain trust and respect, you have to give it. And lastly, the days are long but the years are short, so enjoy this incredible ride!
