Meet the Immutables
Today we talk to the lovely Mimi Tran, Software Engineer for Gods Unchained. Mimi expands on why she chose a degree in Computer Science and why it is important to embrace the unknown and be patient with yourself as you start your career in the tech industry.
Why did you choose to work in tech?
When I grew up, we didn’t have programming as part of the school program, and it was also very uncommon for girls to pursue engineering degrees. When it was time to pick a degree, I was uncertain about what I would like to pursue. Many options came to mind, such as design, art, business or medicine, but engineering was never one of them. However, I always knew that I would want to work in a field that involves being creativite, and it has to be meaningful at the same time.?
My sister decided to switch her degree to Computer Science as she was finishing her first semester of finance at her university. She showed me her website with cool animations and all the creative stuff she could build through coding, and that’s probably the first time I realised that programming could be such a powerful tool to unleash my creative side. You can do all sorts of crazy stuff with coding, from building websites, games, mobile apps or even making art with coding. From that point, I decided to pursue a Computer Science degree, and if I had to make a choice again, without a doubt, I would still choose my degree all over again!
What excites you about this industry?
What excites me the most about the tech industry is the creative freedom that people have with the products that they make. I like making a tangible impact on the products I’m working on, and I feel that software is a field where I can get that rewarding experience. Additionally, I like to be at the forefront of tech and see the potential future technology that people could be incorporating into their lives, and I feel like it’s especially true with blockchain technology, which Immutable is heavily based on.?

How did you end up at Immutable?
I was fresh out of university and was interviewing with different companies, Immutable caught my attention. Firstly, during the interview process, everyone seemed very passionate about what they were doing here, which is a big winning point for me. Secondly, the combination of blockchain and gaming sounded intriguing to me yet exciting at the same time. Immutable, being a startup, presented me with an opportunity to jump into a challenging but exciting field that I could learn a lot from while also getting to work alongside smart and passionate people. Once I realised this, it was easy to jump on board.
What are the main learnings from your journey so far that you want to share with anyone starting a career in tech?
The software industry can be daunting: a seemingly infinite amount of things to learn and numerous pieces of technology and innovations every year. It’s completely normal to have doubts and feel uncomfortable when you first enter the tech industry. We’ve all had those moments when we’ve been asked to do something in our work, and we know exactly what to do, but there are also days when we have no idea how to start. It took me some time to realise how important it is in tech to embrace the unknown. There would always be things you don’t know, and no one in the industry knows everything! Once you accept the fact that everyone in this industry is to some extent similar – we’re all constantly learning and keeping up with the new tech, you will gain more confidence in navigating through those tasks. The key is to break a big problem down into small chunks, read documentations (this is a friendly reminder to myself!), and be patient with yourself!
