Meet Hugo: Darwin's Sound Designer

We’re back with another Meet the Team!

Today, we're exploring the world of Sound Design with Hugo Ferreira , one of the creative forces behind the audio experiences that bring our games to life.

Inspired by a fusion of music and video games, Hugo’s journey as Sound Designer, began by composing music and crafting sound for trailers. However, it was at Darwin Interactive that he truly discovered his calling.

“Darwin Interactive was my first opportunity to work in what I love the most, which is making games.”

Describing his role as "creating the sonic identity of Darwin games" Hugo explains that our creations have an instant nature, making simplicity a crucial aspect. His goal is to seamlessly merge audio elements with gameplay, establishing an immediate connection with the players.

When creating soundscapes for various game categories, environments, and characters, Hugo believes in letting these elements "speak" to him.

“Different themes, environments, and characters all say different things if you pay enough attention. Then, it’s my job to materialize those same things in the real world, in the form of sound.”

Working within a positive environment alongside talented colleagues makes this process even more rewarding, Hugo notes.

“I get to make games with incredibly talented people in a positive environment. What could be better than that? The valuable and insightful feedback from the rest of our wonderful team always helps us steer in the right direction, creatively speaking.“ ??

As for the Sound Design team, Hugo describes their dynamic as a mutual challenge and inspiration, “We challenge and fuel each other, pushing the boundaries of what one could accomplish independently."

And if they were a genre of music, Hugo believes they would be:

"(...) something extremely upbeat and energetic, though still harmonically coherent and inspiring. Something frantic but solid and effective.”
