Meet the Fox Rothschild Attorneys in Your Backyard: Delaware

Fox Rothschild LLP has grown into a national law firm by building on relationships forged over decades by innovative lawyers with deep roots in their communities across the country. Clients get accessible, locally based attorneys backed by a network of colleagues in more than 70 practice areas coast to coast. From our Wilmington den, meet Howard Cohen:

Howard Cohen, a partner in the firm’s Financial Restructuring & Bankruptcy Department, has more than 20 years of experience in financial restructuring, bankruptcy and creditors' rights matters. He represents debtors, official committees, ad hoc committees, equity sponsors, trustees, asset purchasers, lenders and trade creditors in bankruptcy proceedings. Howard?concentrates on the preparation and issuance of non-consolidation and other Delaware opinions, and advises troubled companies and their boards in insolvency situations. He also represents clients in bankruptcy avoidance litigation, including fraudulent transfer and preference litigation.

Get to know Howard:

What I like most about being an attorney: Having spent over twenty years in the restructuring field, I have had the privilege of getting to learn all about my clients (who operate across many different industries) and the businesses they operate.?For me, working hands on with my clients and understanding their businesses is not only personally rewarding but leads to positive results for the clients as well.

Favorite place to bring clients in Wilmington:?Most of my clients only come to Wilmington to appear in Bankruptcy Court.?For many of them, it is their first time ever appearing in court.?Therefore, I am going to say that taking them to Bankruptcy Court and having them meet the Bankruptcy Judge assigned to their case is the highlight of their visit to Wilmington.

Last book I read:?I recently attended a Turnaround Management Event in Chicago where former United States Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis was the guest speaker.??At the end of his speech, he was autographing copies of his book, “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead.”?I went up to the retired four-star Marine Corp general and showed him a picture of my ten year old son taken a few months prior at the United States Naval Academy.?It put a smile on his face.?I asked him if he would write a message in the book for my son and he graciously did so.?When I got home, my son was so excited to see the personalized note from Jim Mattis that he wanted to immediately read the book with me.?Although I had to take the time to explain a lot of what we read in the book, taking the time to read the book with my son has provided me with memories that will last a lifetime.

Favorite Delaware beach:?Would you believe that I have never visited the Delaware beaches??I grew up near the beach in St. Petersburg, Florida and my wife grew up near Ocean City, New Jersey.?Unlike the beaches in Florida that do not have any boardwalks, I absolutely love the boardwalk in Ocean City.?Since my mother-in-law still lives down by the Jersey shore, we are lucky to have a place to crash during the summer.?When we?visit, you will find my family at the boardwalk eating ice cream, pizza and Johnson’s caramel popcorn, and going on the rides with the kids at Playland Castaway Cove and Gillian’s Wonderland Pier.

Go-to feel good movie or show:?As a family, we absolutely love going to see shows on Broadway.?Over the years, we have been fortunate to take the kids to see some amazing shows.?The first show we ever took them to see on Broadway was Wicked.?My twins fell in love with the magic of the show and to this day love to sing along to the songs from the show when we hear them played on the Broadway channel of Sirius XM.

If I wasn’t a lawyer, I’d be:??This is a tough question to answer since I have several passions in life.?I definitely love to travel and see the world, so I could see myself writing about all of my travel adventures kind of like Rick Steves does about Europe.?If I had to pick something that does not revolve around travel, I would probably focus my energies on the blockchain and cryptocurrency space.?I view blockchain as a new form of disruptive technology that has the potential to transform various industries, especially the financial services industry.?I would love to be working with startup ventures in this field and watch as the adoption of the technology transforms life for many around the world, much like the cell phone has done for so many.

Little known fact:?My wife and I (and our kids) are avid cruisers.?At the ripe old age of ten, our twins have already been on 17 cruises.?Although we did not cruise the past three years because of the pandemic, we are getting ready to again venture on our cruise journeys and we already have a couple of upcoming trips planned - one to the Caribbean over winter break and one to Europe in the summer.

A cause I support:?My kids attend a very small Jewish day school in Wilmington, Delaware.?It is very important to me that my kids learn about our Jewish values, history, religion and people.?I serve on the board for my children’s school to ensure that there remains a strong Jewish school in Wilmington able to educate and grow the next generation of Jewish leaders.

Career advice to my younger self:?Never take a job for the money, always pursue your passions.?Life is short and you do not want to waste your precious time doing a job that does not bring you pleasure and a sense of satisfaction.

Where you’ll find me in my free time:?I enjoy spending my free time with my wife and our ten year old twins (boy/girl).?Whether it is traveling, going to a movie, playing tennis as a family, or just shopping together at the mall, I prioritize spending time with my family and making sure that my kids have the best upbringing possible.

I remember thinking when your originally left: "He'll be back in a few years, after that sweatshop (NOT Fox Rothschild) allows him to pay off his student loans. We still miss you in Florida, brother.
