World Food Programme Eastern Africa
Saving Lives, Changing Lives
1. When did you join the WFP IT team and what has been your career journey so far?
I joined the WFP IT team in November 2014, and my journey so far has been interesting to say the least. In the last seven years, on top of great career exposure, I also found lifetime friends, mentors, and people whom I now consider family. To summarize, I had an amazing journey!
2. What makes the IT experience at WFP Somalia different from others? i.e. challenges, opportunities, etc…
In WFP Somalia, the IT team is very inclusive. Our individual opinions and contributions are treated as important, and we really feel that we are part of a greater initiative – providing help to vulnerable people in Somalia.
In WFP Somalia you’re never made to feel different, regardless of your cultural background - once you are part of the team, you have a place and you fit in.
3. What are some of the misconceptions people have about you working in a male-dominated profession?
People probably think there are fields that are gender restrictive; I don’t agree. If you are passionate about your field and put work into it, you can make it yours!
4. If someone was thinking about becoming an IT professional, what advice would you give them?
Listen to what your heart says and, if you like it, go for it. Times have changed, and people are more empowered than ever to follow their passions.
