Meet the Editor

It is a pleasure to introduce you to one of the new editors on our team, Lubaba M. ! We are excited to have Lubaba on our team and look forward to all of her incredible work.

  • What motivated you to join Spheres of Influence?

I am wholeheartedly committed to Spheres of Influence's mission of highlighting underreported stories in global affairs and amplifying marginalized voices. This youth-led platform is crucial in contesting today's era of widespread misinformation. As an Editor here, I aspire to bring my perspective as a woman of colour and immigrant and contribute to its nuanced approach to journalism by collaborating with like-minded peers.

  • What have you gained from the role?

This role is deepening my knowledge of a wide-range of topics across the world. Since joining, it has been much easier for me to be updated on various issues like human rights and environment everywhere from Canada to China. Also, I’ve been improving my writing, editing, and leadership skills by guiding enthusiastic writers with diverse voices.

  • What is your favorite article to date, and why?

I really like “Unpacking New Zealand’s Paid Miscarriage Leave Through an Intersectional Feminist Lens” by Elisa Grunwald. It eloquently describes intersectional feminism, an issue that I am very passionate about. I also think it’s a great example of Spheres of Influence’s mission of unpacking the role that Western mainstream media plays. It talks about how the media portrays Western nations as the benchmark of progressiveness, even though several Asian countries enacted paid miscarriage leave before New Zealand.

  • What do you want to work on most as part of Spheres of Influence?

As an advocate for gender equality and human rights, I'm eager to write and edit articles on these subjects to deepen my understanding of the intricate nuances they encompass. Additionally, having majored in Economics during my undergraduate studies, I would also welcome the opportunity to explore the intersection between economics and environmental issues.

  • What’s one thing not many people know about you?

Growing up, I had a phase where I wanted to be a film director. While my career aspirations have changed, my passion for storytelling lives on.
