It is a pleasure to introduce you to one of our incredible editors, Gabrielle Andrychuk ! We are excited to have Gabi on our team and look forward to all of her incredible work.
I admired how SOI made academic writing more accessible to the general public, overcoming barriers like complex language and paywalls. I wanted to contribute to the effort of making complex topics accessible to everyone. I was particularly drawn to the idea of joining a youth-led collective dedicated to highlighting underreported stories and voices often overlooked in mainstream media.
Moving from academia to the public sector, my position as an editor at Spheres of Influence has provided a fulfilling outlet for my continued passion for international relations and politics more generally. Thanks to my peers, I have learned new perspectives on issues and learned about topics I would otherwise be unfamiliar with. This experience has not only sharpened my attention to detail and editing skills but has also improved my ability to provide feedback that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. I’m very grateful for it.

My favourite article is “An Ongoing Genocide: How Brazil is Fuelling Climate Change and Violence Against Indigenous Communities” by Alex Senchyna. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the issues faced by Indigenous peoples in Brazil, going beyond surface-level reporting to delve into both historical and contemporary contexts. It also provides concrete suggestions for advocacy, encouraging readers to take action and engage with the issues beyond passive awareness. This piece remains incredibly relevant and compliments the documentary The Territory (2022), which I would also highly recommend viewing.
I'd like to continue as an editor. As someone who's naturally curious, editing has given me the chance to dive into different topics. It's also not just about correcting technical or grammatical errors - it's more about creatively enhancing a piece to make it clearer and more cohesive.
