Cognition AI, a startup that had been operating in stealth mode, has unveiled the world's first autonomous AI software engineer, Devin. This groundbreaking invention has the capability to generate code and develop entire websites and software from a single prompt.

Cognition AI’s CEO, Scott Wu along with co-founder Steven Hao made an announcement stating: “Meet Devin, the world’s first fully autonomous AI software engineer. Devin is a tireless, skilled teammate, equally ready to build alongside you or independently complete tasks for you to review. With Devin, engineers can focus on more interesting problems, and engineering teams can strive for more ambitious goals”.

With its minimal to no human involvement, Devin stands out as a coding assistant unlike any other due to its ability to manage entire development projects from start to finish. From writing code to fixing any bugs and carrying out the final execution, Devin can do it all on its own.

The company claims that Devin has successfully finished real-world assignments on Upwork, excelled in genuine engineering interviews with prominent AI firms, and is now regarded as the cutting-edge benchmark on the SWE-bench coding evaluation.

SWE-bench comprises 2,294 software engineering challenges sourced from authentic GitHub issues and corresponding pull requests from 12 widely recognized Python repositories.

In the benchmarks shown below, Devin completed 13.86% of the tasks assigned to it on its own while other results were assisted by users using LLMs which are not automated like Devin.

Claude 2 managed to solve only 4.80% of the problems, while SWE-Llama-13b and GPT-4 could handle 3.97% and 1.74% respectively. Despite completing only 13.86% of tasks independently, Devin still represents a significant advancement.
