Meet Constable Marie-Eve Henry
At 37-years-old, mother-of-two Constable Marie-Eve Henry, took a chance to pursue a career she long admired.?
With her father, grandfather and uncles all serving as officers in Mauritius, it was her twin sister’s move to the army reserves that inspired Marie-Eve to fulfill her own aspirations.?
“I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my family and be a role model for my children. It was my chance to make a difference, contribute to society, and create a better future for my children.”?
Navigating cultural barriers after moving to Australia in 2004, Marie-Eve applied for the Victoria Police Diversity Recruitment Program. The course is designed to assist people from under-represented communities through the recruitment process.??
For Marie-Eve, the program was not only an opportunity for personal development, but also a chance to help strengthen the relationship between police and the African community.?
“It bridges the gap between our cultures and makes our relationship stronger.”?
“When the police force looks like the community it serves, the cultural experiences are often shared and communication between the two parties is more effective. You make a stronger team.”?
The free, 15-week program also pairs applicants with a mentor - often a sworn member - to provide advice and support along the way.??

“I was assigned a female police mentor. We discussed her experiences and the challenges of balancing police work and being a mother. We spoke about the physical, mental and emotional demands of the role. I still consult my mentor about the situations I face on the job today and seek her advice and guidance.”?
Working full time as a general duties officer at Cranbourne police station, Marie- Eve's still learning about the role and where it might take her.?
“My current goal is to gain valuable experience, build confidence, and acquire knowledge that will help me grow further in my career.”?
“As general duty officers, we often collaborate with other specialised units, learning from them and gaining a deeper understanding of their work. I am excited about exploring all the different avenues that the police force has to offer.”?
The Victoria Police Recruitment Diversity Program aims to increase the representation of people from under-represented cultural communities.?
Marie-Eve's advice to anyone considering applying:??
“Seize the support and network provided by the program and give it your best. It’s more than just personal career development. We now can represent our communities within Victoria police. It is a responsibility and a chance to make a positive impact.”?
