Here is the first in my series of 'Meet a Colleague'. Today it's Scott from PMP Utilities.
Who are you? I am the Director of Operations for PMP Utilities in Scotland. We are part of M Group Services.
What does PMP do? We’re a niche mechanical engineering company. In Scotland, we provide bespoke engineering solutions in high-risk confined spaces via rope access to companies such as WGM Engineering, Mackenzie’s, George Leslie, Ross-shire as well as to Scottish Water direct. ?We can also offer our own emergency rescue teams with fully licensed paramedics on hand whilst delivering certain complex, high-risk projects.
Rope access skills allow PMP’s mechanical fitters, engineers, and on-site medical support to put together robust plans, that will ensure the safe and successful completion of any project.
Tell me more about your engineering services.?We deliver all types of mechanical engineering, design, and fabrication within Scotland's water industry; penstocks, replacement guide rails, and riser pipes, all types of pipe and valve work, NDT rope access surveys as well as bespoke repairs for those one-off jobs.?We are often engaged to carry out the ‘head scratchers’ that our customers are completely stumped with.
Deploying our rope access engineers, we can literally get to places that others cannot without a substantial and costly scaffolding system. Having our own in-house CAD design team, we can design and fabricate solutions to fit into openings that other rehab options will not.
We are also the sole UK and Ireland agents for the Amex-10 internal joint and pipe repair system for pipes in excess of 600mm, which is WRAS Approved.?This was used recently by Scottish Water to repair leaking joints on C1, C2, and C3 over a railway in the north of Glasgow.
Tell me more about your paramedic service? Many areas in which we work, e.g. Highland reservoirs or on islands, are remote and access to an ambulance or Accident and Emergency Department can literally be hours away.?Therefore, we have licensed paramedics and emergency rescue teams to support projects in remote areas. ?PMP paramedics have full clinical governance and they carry drug packs including morphine, adrenalin, and specialist defibrillators.

Recently, we were engaged by WGM to provide emergency rope access rescue services at Ayr SPS, a 28m deep wastewater pumping station on the west coast. ?We monitored the tasks and managed all entrants and the confined space to help prevent an accident, rather than respond to one.
Our rope access rescue teams would be ideal for projects working at depth where a robust rescue plan will be required.
Can you give me an example of a bespoke project that PMP has delivered? Two years ago, we were contacted by a large construction company to offer advice to repair a live brick pipe sewer that they piled through in ten locations.?They had tried all other options and the water authority, who are an existing PMP customer, suggested they spoke with us.
After a few visits and surveys, we designed and fabricated an internal stainless steel liner that we were able to install in sections, almost like a timber heading, and remove the intruding piles from within a structural steel shield.
Once fully installed, we grouted the annulus and applied a cementitious screed to the internal pipe bore to fully restore the damaged pipe to service.
How can we find out more about PMP? I am based in Caledonia Water Alliance's office in Stepps, Glasgow – come and say hello and I can tell you more about the services we offer. Alternatively, please comment below or email [email protected] or call me on ?07899 982 884
