Meet Cecilia Lang, SJR’s Chief Revenue Officer

You’ve had such a dynamic and impactful career. Any highlights?

The reason I’m so excited about this role is that I come from the content and storytelling world. I was at the Washington Post Company and all their brands, including Slate and Newsweek, for almost 20 years.

What I am most proud of, looking back, is how I’ve developed the ability to sit and listen to a client and really create value in a customized way. At Washington Post, I focused on innovative approaches that leveraged our publishing platforms. And when I worked in out-of-home advertising at Firefly, for instance, I leveraged data to tell brand stories on our screens, which were on top of taxis and rideshares. We changed the content based on location and target audiences. Figuring out how to mix the physical and digital for maximum effect was a wonderful challenge.

You mentioned that you always see the potential in businesses. Is that a part of your personality?

Definitely! I always see the good in people. I don’t change who I am when I’m at work; I’m pretty much the same. I love to bring out the best in people, and that’s what I’ve done for brands—bring out the best of what they are, and then spread the word.

You’re getting to know SJR; what are your first impressions?

Quality and innovation. And those two traits don't always go together! I didn't know the diverse kinds of things that we do; it’s this incredible body of work. Then there’s the speediness. I saw a brand refresh we executed, and it looked like three or four years of work, but it was done in 10 months. Like, what?? Finally, there’s the trust piece—we’re earning the trust of our clients and that’s why they're coming back. I get the sense we go above and beyond, and I can’t wait to share that with the brand community.
