Meet Cara Cunningham Warren

“We are at a turning point.” says Cara Cunningham Warren, author of International Law in Context, a ground-breaking new title from Carolina Academic Press.?

Cunningham Warren is one of the top-ranked authors by the SSRN, and has received both the 2023 James T. Barnes Sr. Scholar Award and 2023 University of Detroit Faculty Excellence Award—an honor awarded to only one senior faculty member, university-wide, each year for teaching, scholarship, and service. She has been teaching International Law for over 15 years, and has just released her first title with CAP, International Law in Context. This is a book that intends to “empower the next generation of lawyers to take their place. . . [and] paves the way for grounded but big-picture thinking.”

“Part of the challenge is that institutions and legal rules that form the foundation of the system tend to evolve slowly, or, only in the wake of cataclysmic events. . . . But the status quo is not inevitable. It can be transformed by a new generation who operate with a different mindset.”?

Reviews & Reception

Omar Dajani, Professor of Law at McGeorge Global Center for Business and Development, writes of Cunningham Warren’s book: “The casebook is ambitious in scope and a truly impressive achievement for a single-authored work. As I read the book, I had the sense that a knowledgeable and compassionate teacher was sitting next to me – guiding me. . . , challenging me . . . , and making sure I was taking the time to integrate old lessons with new ones.”?

Students feel similarly. “I think that's something this textbook does really well, and some other textbooks could do a little bit better,” Neil Maatta, one of Professor Warren’s current Research Assistants says in a roundtable discussion. “It's really a very aptly named textbook, because everything is explained in the context, in the grander scheme of things, and that makes it very digestible for a reader.” Katie Warwick, another RA and practicing Lawyer says, “It really was written for students to become better lawyers.” And Cunningham Warren says that’s exactly what she was trying to do.?

What's Inside?

What else does Cunningham Warren’s book promise? A wealth of resources. Aside from foundational and contextualized content, International Law in Context has an interactive web page designed to promote ongoing discussion of the materials and the book includes in-depth focus questions, assessments, and recommended readings, plus sample course material with ideas about how to incorporate current events into the classroom.?

What's Next?

“Last spring, . . . I had a? student with deep ties to Palestine and a student with deep ties to Israel exploring the Two-State Solution.” Cunningham Warren recalls. “I saw them grapple with the topic, from deeply personal and opposing perspectives, with grace and a willingness to listen. It was a very meaningful teaching experience for me, and I was proud that the book gave the students a legal foundation to express their hopes and ideas.”?
