Meet Billy - He is a Subject Matter Expert of Gin
This is a story about Billy a barman who greeted myself and my colleagues when we went for a drink after our QBR meeting at 'The Canary Gin Bar' in Bath UK.
The bar sells over 250 types of gin and Billy can tell you about the gins, history and tastes. In addition he is able to advise the correct mixer that should go with your chosen gin in fact, the whole experience when buying your drink is very much like a short consultation.
I'm sure you can see where I am going with this but Billy made our experience a delight. He listened to our needs and used his knowledge to advise us of what would be the best drink for each person. Hey this guy works for a bar but has learned his 'product' well. Even when testing his knowledge he was able to give me examples of gins that would mix well with a tonic for example as well as give me history about the gin and its scent 'undertones' etc....
I suppose what I'm trying to get at here is the fact that this guy knew his product well. He used the buying experience as more of a consultation and therefore became a trusted adviser about his product ie. gin. There was no hard sell or rushed approach either.....
It's great having subject matter experts in your company and I am sure everyone will agree they are a mine of information. However, you need to know where to access their content and knowledge. Think about how you store this information and how you intend to keep it up to date and relevant in your company. If you are finding you are having to ask your subject matter experts again and again the same information perhaps it's time to revisit how you store your content ? Think Billy and his knowledge as a subject matter expert! How would you want to capture your information to ensure you are able to reuse it for sales pitches and RFPS.
So going back to Billy and the gin bar. I had the most amazing pink gin with some obscure bottle of tonic to mix along with fresh raspberries on top. An ideal finish to the end of a long day thanks to 'The Canary Gin Bar' Bath UK.....
