We know that right now, rock is not the most listened genre in the world, nor the one that breaks the music reproduction platforms. However, those who claim that it is dead, could not be more wrong, since we see a lot of pretty cool projects that show us that the guitars and their vibe are alive and not only that, they are also spreading to new generations. Just like what "The Beaches" are doing.
A band of four girls took the Canadian music scene by surprise, presenting a fresh, fun and, above all, rocking proposal. Imagine how hot they are that they have already had the chance to open for true legends such as the Rolling Stones. So if you want to find something new to obsess over, we are sure they are everything you were looking for and here we introduce them to your world.
The Beaches is a Toronto band formed in 2013 by sisters Jordan Miller (lead vocals and bass) and Kylie Miller (guitar) along with Leandra Earl (keyboards and guitar) and Eliza Enman-McDaniel (drums and percussion). They took their name from the neighborhood where three of the members grew up, although prior to this group, both the Millers and Eliza played in a pop punk quartet called Done with Dolls with guitarist Megan Fitchett.
In 2011, they toured with this project opening shows for the band Allstar Weekend, and their biggest hit was performing the theme song for the Canadian teen comedy Really Me. However, they did not last long together because in 2013, Megan left the group. However, it didn't take long for them to get back on track, as some time later they met Leandra, who joined them to create something completely new, focusing more on rock.
In that same year and already under the name of The Beaches, they released their eponymous debut EP, which won quite positive reviews from several specialized media. Although they could not stop their creative impulse, in 2014 they released another short-lived album, Heights, and it was thanks to this collection of songs that they got a contract with Island Records, the subsidiary label of Universal Music. But while they were preparing everything to present their first album, they spent almost three years playing in Canada and visiting other countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States.

But everything changed in 2017 when the band presented Late Show, the album with which they officially debuted that had spectacular singles like "Money" and "T-Shirt", and that counted with the production of Emily Haines and James Shaw from Metric (by the way, HERE you can check our talk with them). With this album, these girls completely smashed it, as they reached number one on the Billboard rock chart in their country and even won the award for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the 2018 Juno Awards, one of the most important recognitions in Canada.
To promote their debut album, The Beaches toured Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, getting more people to listen to their proposal. In 2019, the band released their third EP, The Professional, which they accompanied with singles like "Fascination" and "Snake Tongue". That same year they opened for projects like The Glorious Sons and Passion Pit, but later the band had one of the biggest opportunities of their career, as they were selected as guests for the only Canadian stop on the Rolling Stones' No Filter Tour 2019... yes, they were the opening act for 'their satanic majesties'.
If something is very clear to us, is that there are a lot of women doing incredible things in music nowadays, especially in rock. Many girls have extraordinary bands and that is just the case of The Beaches, who based on guitars, a direct and honest sound, fun lyrics and a solid proposal, have earned the recognition of the specialized press and a good fan base that follows them wherever they go. But not only that, they also sell out their shows in their homeland.
And you may be wondering, what's all the fuss about this group? Well, we know they are not inventing absolutely nothing, but their vibe, the themes of their songs -which range from having a good time to forgetting your problems-, their sound where they mix danceable pop rock with a pinch of punk (very slight), distorted riffs, mind-blowing synthesizers and how wonderful they are during their live performances, make them one of the most interesting projects we have these days. And without a doubt, they look to be on the bill of the coolest festivals in the world very soon. If you want to listen to something revitalizing, without a doubt, you have to get into them, you won't regret it.
