Meet Anthony Scotto, Omnibuild's Director of Operations

A company’s success is largely dependent on its people, which is why Omnibuild places significant focus on their hiring process. Omnibuild’s Director of Operations, Anthony Scotto, feels that while academic credentials are important, a strong work ethic and a passion for what you do are equally valuable.

Having been raised in a construction family, Anthony often listened to his parents discuss the many projects they worked on. Driving past various iconic buildings in New York City and knowing that they helped to shape them was the coolest thing in the world. For Anthony, this instilled a sense of pride in him and he was eager to be involved. Pursuing a career in the industry was a natural path from day one. “Most people that apply for positions at Omnibuild are right out of college and want to start right away, or like me, they have a family history in the industry. They feel that same? sense of pride when they've been involved in a successful project.

Anthony believes character traits such as work ethic, resilience, a strong desire to learn, good communication skills, and an ability to collaboratively work as a team are the best attributes to embody on a day to day basis and what people pursuing a career in this industry should bring to the table.

“The material that you learn in college doesn't always translate to the real world, but the work ethic that you have and the passion for learning does. So, as long as you have that strong work ethic and the perseverance to make something of yourself, then you'll be successful in whatever you do and wherever you go.”?

Anthony went on to say, “The beautiful thing about Omnibuild is that it is a place that has people from all backgrounds - some have engineering degrees and some did not have the opportunity to go to college. We challenge the stigma that formal education is the end-all be-all. Some of the most valuable members of our team were never afforded the opportunity to attend college, yet they can run circles around some of my previous engineering professors. Moreover, some of the most valuable members of our team have degrees in fields completely unrelated to the field of construction. We have multiple examples that we mention to new hires and then say… ‘Don't be let down or nervous about not knowing too much about the industry.’ We give them the opportunity and the keys, and the rest is up to them.”

Omnibuild’s sweet spot is narrowing the gap between beginners and experienced workers through mentorship. “A major part of a project’s success is predicated on mentoring the younger staff and making sure that they're developing and growing.” Anthony says their strength is “guiding new workers to move on to bigger roles.” It’s an investment in the company’s future because they believe these young workers are building the future of the company.

He continued, “I don't think there's any other company out there that'll give you the keys to drive your own success. We have tremendous mentors within this company that are more than willing to share their wisdom, knowledge, and experiences. We promote collaboration. There's no other company out there that lets people who are fresh and new in the company with limited experience join meetings with some of the biggest developers in the city… We empower everyone to learn every part of the business… and I think that's a beautiful thing.”
