Marilia, could you share a little about you?
I'm Amara's On Demand Assistant Operations Manager - Daily Ops Lead. I’m Brazilian, I’m a huge soccer fan (N-A-ú-T-I-C-O!), I love to dance and travel, and I’m passionate about the idea of making content accessible through subtitling.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
When I’m not working, I like to hang out with my friends and family at home or try out a new bar or restaurant. I love going to soccer games, dancing, and watching movies and TV series. I also love to spend some quality time with myself, so I like to do some things on my own, like go to the movies or to the beach.
If you could change one thing about the world to make it better, what would you do?
People would hear and respect each other regardless of their race, gender, religion, and political beliefs.
You're on a spaceship. About to have first contact with a new alien species. What's the first thing you tell them?
Run to the hills! Hahaha :)

How did you end up at Amara and what do you do here?
I first heard about Amara in a translation workshop in Brazil. I didn’t have any experience in subtitling, so I started as a volunteer. After a few months, Amara On Demand was created, and I saw they were looking for translators for a paid position. I filled out the application, and was hired to be a part of the first group of translators in AOD. I wanted to help as much as possible, and I kept pinging the managers - Aleli to be more specific - to see if they needed help with anything. That’s when I was offered a PM position. I was thrilled with this opportunity, and it was amazing to see the trust they were putting on me. In the beginning, we were only two PMs and a small group of translators. Today, I’m Amara On Demand Assistant Operations Manager - Daily Ops Lead, and alongside with Jenny, I coordinate a group of 6 other PMs and we have a large number of translators spread around the world.
What's your favorite thing about Amara and your role here?
My favorite thing about Amara is our mission of making content accessible through subtitling and the people that work here. Amara provides a safe and inclusive workspace, and it’s amazing to see how people - including our staff and linguists - are treated here.
What does inclusion mean to you?
Inclusion means equal opportunities for everyone. It’s about leveling the playing field to make sure that everyone has access to all relevant and useful information and knowledge that is available out there. If information is accessible to everyone regardless of the language they speak, people will be able to make more informed decisions which can make a huge difference.
Why did you choose to work in accessibility and, specifically, at Amara?
I always wanted to work for an organization that makes a difference. That’s why I have been working for Amara since 2013. Amara’s mission is to make content accessible through subtitling and that’s exactly what we do everyday with both Amara On Demand and Amplifying Voices.
Coffee or tea? Cats or dogs? Mountains or sea?
I’m a coffee person. To be honest, I could say I’m addicted to coffee. I drink it around 4-5 times a day. I crave a cup of tea only when I feel sick. Sorry! I have no pets at the moment, and I think it’s really hard to choose between cats and dogs. Living on the coast of Brazil, I have to say I prefer sea over mountain. I love going to the beach on a sunny day. When I’m feeling sad, anxious or stressed out the sea calms me down, and brings me some inner peace.
