A MedTech Company without Clinicians is just a Tech Company in HealthCare

“A MedTech Company without Clinicians is just a Tech Company in HealthCare”… as Clinicians Care way more about Patient Outcomes than anyone else.

I was once challenged by a Nurse who claimed that “Doctors are notoriously Bad Managers” (sic)… Needless to say I nearly choked… so I retorted by saying that “There are as many “Bad Managers” among Clinicians as there are in any other profession…”…

(… furthermore, and perhaps this is for future debate or another blog, but there is an important difference between “Clinicians in Management” and “Clinician Leadership”…)

What is certain is that Clinicians are naturally driven by Patient Outcomes, care about both the Inputs AND the Process, and so They obsess and worry about Quality, Safety and the overall Patient Experience (“PEx”) along the Continuum of Care, across the Patient’s Journey to Wellness.

… and this is why at least 25% of Health Tech Startup Founders and Collaborators should come from the Clinical World, even if they are not needed for their Clinical savvy.

This is an absolute must for this Deep Care or Empathy to Percolate, Infiltrate and Permeate the overall MedTech Company Culture, positively affecting everyone, all Stakeholders and everything like Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Operations and Customer Success.

Using Clinicians to better align the Startup’s Approach with that of the Health System is thus Non-negotiable. They have worked inside the very peculiar and particular Clinical Environment, They have experienced all that can potentially go wrong that can compound into Patient Morbidity and Mortality, having sweat the small details, and have developed a way of thinking and acting that cannot possibly be acquired by non-Clinical People.

Good Start-up-minded Clinicians help Do the Right Things Right, ensuring it’s also good for business, enhancing the much-needed Trust the HealthCare Industry needs.

So, let’s keep putting the Patient First, go above and beyond the call of duty, ensuring Quality and Safety throughout, by including Clinicians in Our MedTech Start-ups.
