Meditation: Are You Ready to Leap Into the Abyss?
When my son was very young we had a game that he and I played. I would lay on the floor and he would come running as fast as he could and launch himself at me, feet first. I would feign fear, do a version of a catch and roll and then “rough him up” a little bit much to his shear, childlike joy.
He had no doubt that he could run full speed, hurl himself into the atmosphere and land safely in my arms. He had faith. It was a part of a basic relationship between us.
Faith is also a basic ingredient in my relationship with God. Hebrews 11:1 describes it this way. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
My faith in God means that I can run top speed, hurl myself into the abyss and He will catch me.
Unfortunately, I am no longer a child. Science and reason, added to my intellect which processes my wants and needs and comes up with what is best for me gets in the way. Too many times as an adult I am reluctant to run full speed and launch myself into the abyss. What if I don’t get what I KNOW I need?
Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.”
Hebrews 6:18 assures us, “it is impossible for God to lie,” so “we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.”
God doesn’t always answer things the way we want Him to. But He does not lie, and he does not leave you or forsake us.
Ready to run full speed and hurl yourself into the Abyss? He will catch you.
