Meditation: The New Black?
Why is there more interest in meditation today? I can think of several reasons, here are just a few:
- 75% to 90% of all doctor’s visits are stress-related
- Meditation reduces stress and decreases levels of cortisol. Cortisol is an important hormone in the body, secreted by the adrenal glands. It’s commonly referred to as “the stress hormone” because it’s also secreted in higher levels during the body’s ‘fight or flight’ response to stress.
- Harvard Medical School and other prominent research centers suggest that mindfulness meditation can help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression, and pain.
- Many successful people are practicing meditation – Rupert Murdoch, Ray Dalio, Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Clint Eastwood and Jerry Seinfeld.
If you interested in starting a meditation practice, but have no clue on how to do it. Try these tips to get your started:
Meditation is easy and portable and can be done anywhere and at any time. You don’t have to be laying down or sitting in a quiet room with candles and soft music. You can meditate on a train or subway, while waiting at a doctor’s office, and waiting for your number to be called at the DMV.
Find out which Meditation technique works for you. Pick one of the following techniques. If the technique you choose doesn’t work, let it go and choose something else.
- Chose a mantra (word or phrase). Repeat it over and over in rhythm with your breath.
- Visualize a place where you feel at peace.
- Use a guided meditation on You Tube. Relax and listen to the words.
- Focus on a small, meaningful object held in your hand or placed in front of you.
