Meditation for ADHD

Meditation for ADHD

Meditation for ADHD?

While different kinds of therapy and medication have always been the go-to treatments for?attention deficit hyperactivity?(ADHD or ADD), there is an alternative treatment that has been proven to help relieve symptoms of ADHD and strengthen the brain’s ability to focus. And I’m sure you already know what we’re about to say…

Yes, meditation!

Meditation is just the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? Mindful meditation is the key to strengthening your mind and emotions, so why wouldn’t it help with ADHD? And the good part is that you don’t even have to be doing yoga to meditate, you can practice mindful, strengthening meditation on a walk or even sitting at your desk! So, take a breath… in and out… and let’s look at some of the ways that meditation can help treat ADHD.?

Mindfulness and the brain?

Did you know that you can?exercise your brain? Just like our bodies need exercise to stay fit and healthy, so do our brains in order to grow, improve cognitive abilities, and sharpen our mental capacity!?Meditation?is a great way to exercise your brainpower, focus your attention, and help keep your mind from wandering, especially if you live with ADHD.?

Mindful meditation is an active practice that enables you to find your center and focus your attention on the present moment. This activates a part of the brain called the?prefrontal cortex, responsible for complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision planning, focus, and impulse control. This is also the part of the brain that controls your dopamine levels- which ADHD brains don’t have a lot of! Practicing meditation daily can help raise your dopamine levels and strengthen the prefrontal cortex of your brain, which in turn helps with your attention and focus, and can even help treat anxiety and depression.?

The art of meditating for ADHD?

Those who live with ADHD can also experience high amounts of stress and a “racing brain” which can lead to raised blood pressure and blood sugar levels and high heart rate which in turn decreases your?immune system. This is when it’s most important to meditate. Here are some tips on meditating specifically for soothing ADHD symptoms:?

  1. Find your comfort zone.?Find a place that helps you relax and that is free from distraction. Meditate in a space that is also physically comfortable for you!?

  1. Use sensory cues.?If you struggle with transitioning from a high-functioning state to a slower, more relaxed state, try using sensory cues like listening to music, ambiance, wearing your favorite sweater, or something that lets your mind and body know that it’s time for meditation.?

  1. Try active meditation.?If you just can’t bear to be still for a long period of time, that’s fine! Active meditation is great if you want to keep your body moving but also want to calm your mind. Try going for a long walk outside for your meditation!

  1. Stick to a routine.?Having ADHD makes that difficult, but there are ways to make a meditation routine and stick to it! Get an accountability partner to check in on you or a meditation coach who understands ADHD and which exercises could be most beneficial for you.?

Always remember to celebrate the wins and remind yourself why you are doing this on the tough days. Every day isn’t going to be perfect, but every day counts!?
