PRII annual conference honours Mary Robinson at Croke Park
Former President Mary Robinson has been presented with the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII) President's Medal in recognition of her advocacy of justice and climate action.
Robinson was honoured before 250 delegates at the PRII National Conference at Croke Park on Thursday and is one of only seven recipients alongside the likes of John Hume and Gay Byrne.
Presenting the award, PRII president David G. described Robinson as "a skilled debater and communicator" as well as "a tireless global advocate for the voiceless, a champion of justice, and an unwavering leader in the fight for climate action."
In her speech, Robinson reminisced about her presidential campaign and referenced current events such as the US election and Gaza, but she also spoke about the importance of words at a time of widespread misinformation.
"I remember that being said to me so many times: words matter. Be careful with your words. Be careful not to insult people or make jokes that put them down because words matter," she said.
"We're in a time where we're asking, does truth matter? It's a very serious time."
Robinson went on to give examples of the ways in which words have been used to disenfranchise people, terms such as 'illegitimate child,' 'illegal immigrant' and 'Mná na héireann,' which was used more pejoratively prior to her 1990 victory speech.
She concluded by telling the delegates that communicators should, like her, say with pride that they are "prisoners of hope" and focussed on a better future.
In a video message, Taoiseach Simon Harris commended Robinson for "upholding of the highest standards in ethical communication" and her "incredible record of public service".
