Media Training: Working Away
Guy Clapperton MCIPR
The media trainer that helps you avoid being misquoted, misunderstood or misrepresented. My team will ensure you get value out of speaking to the press.
This year I've done a lot of media training and will be going into a virtual session within hours. The virtual session is for someone based outside the UK. This year I've also done a number of in-person sessions outside the UK so I asked the comms professionals in question: why use a British journalist rather than the home-grown talent? France isn't short of publishing experts, for example.
The respondents from Germany were extremely helpful. Getting a British journalist rather than opting for someone local was one of the first decisions they made - primarily because they needed the training to happen in English and wanted a native speaker. That meant a Brit because of geographical proximity. They considered getting someone in from America but the reputation of the British press is that we're tougher (dead fierce, me) so it made sense from more than one angle to go for someone from over here. After that it was a matter of talking to people to see who had the right credentials and who was the right fit.
Maybe this sounds familiar. Maybe you're in France, Germany, Amsterdam or somewhere else in mainland Europe and you want a media trainer who's a native English speaker.
Never forget the team and I are happy to travel. If you need us to come to you, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Video tip: don't talk over the question
Journalists will sometimes talk over you if they're not happy with your answer to a question. That's beyond your control and it's best to stay polite; however, talking over them in turn can be a really counterproductive idea and in this video post I outlined why:

Paul's documentary
People who have used Clapperton Media for training service with me and Paul Angell on cameras will be aware that I generally introduce him as an "award winning documentary maker".
His award-winning documentary has its London premier (the award was in the US) literally tomorrow. I'll be there and it would be great to meet some of the readers of this tip sheet there. I'm very proud for Paul - tell him I said so and there'll be trouble!
