Media Statement: ATNS CEO recognises staff for their professionalism and commitment

The CEO of Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited, Ms Nozipho Mdawe, in the presence of several other ATNS Executive Committee members, today presented certificates of recognition to ATNS Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) and ATNS Central Airspace Management (CAMU) Personnel for their exceptional service delivery and unwavering commitment to safety during the FlySafair SFR212 flight incident on April 21, 2024.
The certificate awarding ceremony was held at the Johannesburg Air Traffic Control Centre at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).
Ms Mdawe praised "the professionalism and commitment of the ATNS Air Traffic Controllers and CAMU Personnel for their efforts in ensuring the safety of everyone on board."
During the incident, the ATNS Air Traffic Controllers and CAMU personnel efficiently rerouted the aircraft to its original departure point, ORTIA, demonstrating their readiness to uphold aviation safety protocols during a flight emergency.
Ms Mdawe emphasised the rarity of such incidents in South African aviation and "commended the collaboration between ATCs, pilots, airport ground crew, and aviation weather specialists within the South African aviation value chain". She also highlighted "the extensive training of ATNS Air Traffic Controllers to handle various situations, including adverse weather conditions and onboard medical distress".
In closing, Ms Mdawe applauded the exemplary conduct, unmatched dedication, and selfless commitment of the ATNS Air Traffic Controllers and CAMU personnel, underscoring their role in maintaining the safety of the South African airspace.
