Media Momentum Surges for Paralympics
I am really looking forward to following Team USA’s Olympic Swim Team at the games – as a passionate swimmer, it’s my favorite time of year. I know that 700 swimmers competed for 52 slots –undoubtedly a grueling test for all involved! Congrats to all those who made it to the final selection.
As I look at how the world is gearing up for this epic competition, I’m amazed by the attention also being garnered by the Paralympics, which has remarkably grown into one of the world’s biggest sporting events. A record number of global broadcasters covering the Paralympics this year translates to broadcast coverage in over 160 countries. The revenue raised from media sales is reported to be 20% higher than the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games, indicating both an increased public interest in watching the games, as well as recognition from the media industry of the importance of these games. What’s more, Paris 2024 will mark a historic Paralympic moment with live coverage of all 22 sports events for the first time!
The Olympics are inspiring in so many ways. The courage, persistence, and sheer excellence is astounding, and the Paralympic athletes are the epitome of what the Olympic games symbolize. ?More than a sporting event, the Paralympics is a snapshot of what is possible, and this new resurgence of global exposure has the potential to create a lasting ripple effect that results in increased opportunity, media representation, and respect for those among the disabled community. I am very much looking forward to watching it this year!
