But first!

Overview of the 2024 European Parliament elections
Here are the 6 most-discussed topics in conversations on X following the results of the 2024 EU elections:
1??Rise of Nationalist Parties in Europe
One of the main topics discussed on X was the rise of “right-wing influence” in Europe. Some users expressed concerns about the results of the EU parliamentary elections, arguing that they confirm the continuous rise of nationalist and populist movements globally, endangering the status quo.?
One user, in particular, predicted that European countries will follow the "America First" sentiment and that we will be seeing slogans such as "Germany First" and "France First." This might not be far from the truth given that Hungary’s official motto for its upcoming turn at the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union is “Make Europe Great Again,” a reference to the campaign slogan of former US president Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, right-wing supporters in the US welcomed these results with some of them reminding people that “November is coming,” alluding to the upcoming 2024 United States presidential election. Some users saw the massive right-wing wave as people rejecting the “woke agenda, Net Zero and mass migration.”?
Some felt that the term “far right” used by the media to describe the EU elections was inadequate, calling it a “slur”. Instead, they preferred the term “New Right,” which, according to them, describes: euro-scepticism, pro-borders, anti-woke, global warming scepticism, pro-farmers, pro-peace talks in Ukraine, etc.
Overall, X users felt that the swing to the right was a consequence of low voter turnout in some countries, as well as the growing voter dissatisfaction with the economic impacts of immigration, prolonged and escalating geopolitical tensions, and the transition to green energy.

2??The Future of Ukraine
The war in Ukraine was frequently mentioned as X users discussed the implications of the EU election results for both the Kremlin and Ukraine.?
Some argued that many of the right-wing political parties, a part of which they labelled as pro-Kremlin, had won a significant number of seats in EU countries which could influence the EU stance on Ukraine. The country’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was said to be “the huge loser” in these elections, as the parties who won were mainly against funding Ukraine.?
Others thought that the election results suggested a continuation of support from the EU towards Ukraine, notably due to the pro-European and pro-Ukrainian European People's Party (EPP) receiving the largest number of seats in the European parliament.
3??Macron’s Loss and Snap Elections
One of the biggest news in France broke on 9 June when French President Emmanuel Macron decided to dissolve parliament and call for a snap parliamentary election after losing the popular vote in the European election poll to Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party (RN).
Users on X shared posts about the news, some quoting parts from Macron’s announcement, notably his statement on how the rise of nationalists in Europe and France poses a danger both for France and Europe. Others called Macron’s announcement a “panic” move, dubbing the election results as a “historic loss”, “humiliating defeat”, “major loss”, and “stinging defeat” for the French president.?
Users also shared articles by the New York Times and Reuters, which pointed out that Macron’s move to dissolve France’s parliament was a “high-risk” and “bold” election “gamble.”
4??Belgian Prime Minister Resignation
Users shared the news about Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo resigning after his party lost the EU elections. They posted videos of De Croo on the verge of tears after his party received only 5.8% of the votes. In the replies to these posts, right-wing supporters were excited about the news, writing that “wokeness” and “globalism” are over and that it is the USA and Canada’s turn to “wake up.” Some users tagged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, writing that it was his turn to lose and resign.?

5??The Rise of AfD in Germany
After the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) took second place in the EU election, some X users labelled AfD as a “far-right nazi party” and credited its win to the rise of “far-right extremism in Germany.”?
They raised concerns about the party’s election programme which, according to them, includes a ban on abortion, making a German currency, and leaving the EU. Some were worried that the far-right triumph would lead to less transparency and freedom.?
Users also circulated videos and news articles of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier saying “Let us never forget the damage caused in Europe by nationalism and hatred," when he visited a World War II massacre site in France a day after the European elections.
Other users as well as supporters of AfD saw the party’s win as a sign that the “average” people of Germany are distrusting “the elites” and are dissatisfied with the country’s current immigration policies. They felt as if mainstream politicians do not address their concerns and that the “silent majority” has finally spoken against the left-wing policies.
6??Georgia Meloni’s Win With the Party Brothers of Italy
After Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Brothers of Italy party won the most votes in the European parliamentary election, users took to X to either congratulate or criticise her.
While some saw her victory as “grim” and “worrying” news, others thanked her for “defeating the socialists.”?There were also those who called her a “disappointment” because they felt she had fulfilled almost none of her pre-election promises.
Meloni was blamed for failing to fix the illegal immigration issue in Italy. Some even claimed that she had reversed her hard stance on immigration and started “letting everyone in,” calling her a “covert globalist” or a “globalist puppet.”???
