The Media Depiction of Black Men is Deplorable.
The media depicts Black people at their absolute worst.?For example, the media constantly reports that Black males are disproportionately likely to be incarcerated for drug offenses. However, this fact is not written in the context of how it is connected to other factors. It is not registered as a racial issue but as a social problem. There is a vast difference between "social problems" and "racial problems." Many social problems do not have a racial component. These include poverty, homelessness, lack of education, child abuse, etc.
Meanwhile, there are many instances to counterbalance these harmful media tropes. For example, the media wants you to believe more Black men are in prison than in college. The statistics say there is a problem, but no one wants to discuss it. Why? There are several reasons: Black men are a small minority in prison, and if the numbers are low enough, people will say it's not a problem. Black men have a hard time getting jobs. They have to compete with white men. White men are willing to work for less pay. Black men are often accused of crimes they didn't commit.

Most media outlets know this, yet they continue doubling to make you think 13% of the population commits 100% of the crime.?They use false and misleading statistics to "prove" that the black community is disproportionately involved in crime. The fact is, we can all agree that the black community does commit crimes. The question is, how much? In a recent post for the Daily Caller, I looked at some of the most common statistics used to prove that the black community commits crimes disproportionately. In actuality, Black men are arrested for a higher percentage of their crimes than white men. This means the justice system skews to being more lenient towards white people who commit the same crimes as Black people.
Sadly, many people fall for this racist propaganda associated with the negative portrayal of Blacks in the media.?We're told repeatedly that if we're not educated and not working hard, we're lazy. This stereotype of Black people has been around for hundreds of years and continues to be reinforced in the media today. We're also told that Black people are uneducated, lazy, and irresponsible and that they should get off their lazy butts and go to school. This is a blatant lie, and it's not based on any reality. We must stop accepting this dehumanizing, irresponsible, and ignorant reporting to move forward.
