I delivered a session on “How to use ChatGPT: Enhancing Learning and Productivity for Medical Students.” The talk focused on equipping medical students with the knowledge to effectively use AI tools like ChatGPT to augment their learning. This article reflects on the experiences from the session, with a particular emphasis on the concerns and limitations of AI, especially in verifying the authenticity of information.
ChatGPT in Medical Education: A Valuable Ally
ChatGPT is an advanced AI model capable of providing information, generating ideas, and assisting in academic tasks. In medical education, its potential is vast—it can help students comprehend complex concepts, draft reports, and simulate clinical scenarios. During the session, students were introduced to practical uses of ChatGPT, such as generating differential diagnoses, simplifying complex medical terminology, and structuring study plans. The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing newfound confidence in using AI as a study aid.
Concerns and Limitations
Despite its many advantages, the session also highlighted critical concerns regarding the use of ChatGPT in medical education:
1. Authenticity and Reliability of Information: One of the primary concerns raised was the accuracy of the information provided by ChatGPT. AI-generated responses are only as reliable as the data they were trained on, and there is always a risk of encountering outdated or incorrect information. Students were advised to cross-reference AI-generated content with reliable sources such as peer-reviewed journals, official medical guidelines, and textbooks. A key takeaway was that ChatGPT should be seen as a supplementary tool rather than a primary source of information.
2. Ethical Considerations: The ethical use of AI in academic settings is another significant concern. Students were cautioned against using ChatGPT to generate exam answers or assignments without appropriate acknowledgment, as this could be considered academic misconduct. Understanding the ethical boundaries is essential to maintaining academic integrity.
3. Critical Thinking and Dependency: An important discussion point was the risk of students becoming overly reliant on AI, potentially undermining their critical thinking skills. The students were encouraged to use ChatGPT as an aid rather than a crutch. They were reminded that medical practice involves critical analysis and clinical judgment that AI cannot replace.
Strategies for Effective Use
To mitigate these concerns, several strategies were proposed during the session: Cross-Referencing Information: Always validate the information generated by ChatGPT against trusted medical sources. Developing a habit of cross-checking can help ensure that the knowledge gained is accurate and up-to-date.
Regular Practice and Familiarization: The more students engage with ChatGPT, the better they will understand its capabilities and limitations. Regular use can help students become more proficient at asking precise questions and interpreting AI-generated responses critically.

Understanding Limitations: Recognizing that ChatGPT lacks real-world experience and cannot provide medical advice is crucial. It’s a tool for learning and productivity, not a substitute for expert consultation or clinical decision-making.
The session fostered a robust discussion on the role of AI in medical education. Students appreciated the balanced approach, recognizing both the potential and pitfalls of ChatGPT. Some students expressed initial reservations, particularly around the accuracy of AI-generated information, but they were reassured by learning about the importance of cross-referencing and critical evaluation.
A particularly insightful moment came when a student shared their experience of using ChatGPT to understand a complex medical topic, only to later find discrepancies when checked against a standard textbook. This highlighted the need for vigilance and reinforced the session’s central message: ChatGPT is a powerful tool, but it must be used judiciously.
Take-Home Messages
1. ChatGPT is a valuable tool but should be used judiciously.
2. Always cross-reference AI-generated content with reliable sources.
3. Understand the limitations and ethical considerations of AI.
4. Practice makes perfect—regularly use ChatGPT to enhance your learning.
