Med SLPs Do ??This?? with Complex Cases

“I would almost be paralyzed by the number of complexities I’d have to know and understand in order to make a decision.”
??That’s an actual quote from one of the most brilliant medical SLPs I know when discussing complex clinical decision-making.
It was kind of calming to know that I wasn’t the only one who ever felt this way.
Like the time I watched in horror as a whole green M&M silently slid down the trachea of a patient with a rare diagnosis I had never heard of before. I read as many research papers as I could on her unique condition, but those papers didn’t tell me what to do.
This begs the question…
What do medical SLPs actually DO when working with complex cases (once the state of near-paralysis subsides)?
To answer that question, we’re bringing you eight medical SLPs and eight hours of education FOR FREE (eligible for 0.8 Advanced ASHA CEUs if you become a member of the MedSLP Collective)!
Real talk:
What we encounter in the real world isn’t always beautifully mapped out in a textbook.
??♀? Like those patients in acute care or the nursing home who have dysphagia but struggle to complete exercises or compensatory strategies because of their intellectual or developmental disability.
??♀? Or the patients who are on and off the vent while juggling multiple diagnoses that may or may not make their dysphagia worse (or shoot, maybe even be the cause of their dysphagia?)
??♀? Or those patients who show up with one diagnosis, but YOU see symptoms that don’t match that diagnosis…and now you’re wondering if they’re even correctly diagnosed at all.
That’s why eight of my brilliant MedSLP Collective mentors are coming together to go beyond the basics and guide you on what to actually do when it comes to advanced therapy and complex patients.
