No mechanism in existing laws for holding political parties accountable for manifestos
ISLAMABAD: There is no mechanism in existing laws relating to elections to make political parties accountable for their manifestoes, the National Assembly was told on Thursday.
An interesting query during the question hour about the audit of manifestoes was asked by MNA Khurram Shahzad Virk. He wanted to know whether there is any mechanism available in existing laws relating to elections, to make political parties accountable on their manifesto, and whether an audit has been conducted in this regard.
However, replying to his question, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Azam Nazeer Tarar said the manifestos of the political parties were neither a pre-requisite for the enlistment of parties nor a requirement of the Election Act 2017 and the Election Rules 2017.
The minister also added further that no provision of relevant clauses of acts and rules warrants an audit of the manifesto of a party by the Election Commission.? ?
