MEC Maile Tables 2022-2023 Annual Report @GPL

This morning, the MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development, Lebogang Maile tabled the 2022-2023 Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) , Annual Report to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL). Speaking at the Legislature, Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi took the opportunity to congratulate the DID for the unqualified audit towards improved infrastructure delivery.

MEC Maile said, “During the year under review, as part of economic transformation, our performance on the percentage of budget spent on township enterprises against identified commodities was 29,70%, which is above the 7,19% of the previous financial year. We embarked on the implementation of a property commercialisation and optimisation strategy to identify revenue generating, space optimisation and cost reduction strategies. The Department will continue to identify and evaluate the provincial properties and prioritise the most valuable assets with the highest potential for repurposing and development, as well as leasing out to township Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and black businesses for economic development purposes”.

For the year under review, the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) has successfully completed several key facilities in the form of new builds, refurbishments, renovation, conditional assessments, and electro-mechanical work for social infrastructure projects. In total, the DID has completed 14 infrastructure projects on behalf of client departments within the Gauteng City Region. Additionally, 80 maintenance projects were completed on behalf of the Department of Health, whilst, on behalf of STARS we managed to complete a total of 52 maintenance projects against a target of 47. The DID completed several new builds including Mapenane Secondary School, the Sebokeng Zone 17 Clinic, Finetown Clinic and Mandisa Shiceka CDC. Refurbishments included the Transoranje Leaners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) school which is vitally important for the diverse and inclusive education needs in our Province Refurbishments were also completed at Laerskool Wierdapark and Laerskool Wonderboom Suid. ?Electro-mechanical projects completed include Johannesburg Laundry, Dunswart Laundry, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Tshwane District Pharmacy, Phidisong Clinic and Bertha Gxowa Hospital.

MEC Maile added, “During the 2022/23 financial year, the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) managed to create a total of 80 528 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities through GPG Departments and Municipalities, whilst 1 909 beneficiaries were successfully trained. The DID started putting together the Vacant Land and Facilities Maintenance Programme, where vacant sites and properties owned by the provincial government will be maintained through utilising the surrounding communities as labour, creating much-needed employment”.
