Measuring an Airport's Fuel Potential
Let's say your goal was to pursue 100% of the fuel business at your airport and market area. Where do you start? First, let's take a look at your airport and determine your market area so we can calculate the full scope of the area fuel sales potential. Next, let's figure out the fuel sales potential by looking at all flight activity in the market area and multiply the fuel burn rate for the aircraft by the flight time, then aggregate this data.
By ranking the operators and owners by fuel potential, we can measure their contributions to the airport and market area. This provides a list of worthwhile prospects in your market and visibility to your overall market potential. You can also quantify the contributions of current clients and keep strengthening those business relationships.
Now that you have identified and ranked your prospects, go get them!
Looking at the airport, market area and National Airspace growth, we want to see if our airports are keeping pace and if the "tide is rising for all boats". By selecting the recent history of departures and fuel volume, we can compare year over year growth. This approach helps smooth out the seasonality of business aviation activity. We separate these figures below with the percentage of growth for the airport, market area and NAS.
1. What is the current fuel potential at my airport and in my market area? The Area Operations chart shows the monthly fuel volume and market percentage for each airport in the market area.
The Airport Fuel and Area Fuel charts detail a rolling 13 month average and monthly changes in volume.
2. Where does my airport rank among the airports in my market area? We rank each airport in the US National Airspace (NAS) monthly based on fuel potential and overall based on their 13 month total.
3. Is my airport growth keeping pace within my market area and the NAS? We calculate the percentage of change in fuel volume from the Current Month vs. Same Month Last Year to measure growth.
4. Who are the Top Operators in my market area? We rank the Business Aviation list by recent fuel potential and provide a breakdown of departure counts and aircraft fleet type.
5. Who are the Top Owners in my market area? We rank the General Aviation list by fuel potential and provide details for departure counts and more. In this example, we are only showing the Top 2 (Non Blocked) aircraft registration IDs.
These insights will help the airport strengthen their business relationships with their most valuable customers and concentrate their marketing efforts on the most worthwhile prospects in their area.
