Surveying the past
For the first time, Fort Nepean can be studied in 3D
Landair Surveys had the privilege of working alongside Conservation Studio and Parks Victoria to complete 3D infrastructure mapping of the historic Fort Nepean military complex, located at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula.
Fort Nepean was a critical part of Victoria’s defences from the 1880s until 1945, after the government decided our rich goldfields needed protection.?Due to its strategic position, Fort Nepean became an important defence post, and numerous military fortifications were built, making Port Phillip one of the most heavily defended harbours in Australia.?Fort Nepean’s?Gun Emplacement 6 entered into military history after firing the first shot of the British Empire in the First World War and the first Australian shot of World War II.
Due to the scarcity of asbuilt records, Landair was tasked with accurately measuring the heritage buildings as well as the tunnel networks linking the site. Over the course of three weeks, two scanning teams measured five gunneries, observation posts, engine rooms and a complex network of tunnels with subterranean rooms over multiple levels.?
The end result was over 600 scans totalling 300GB of coloured pointcloud data showing, for the first time, how all the buildings and tunnels relate to each other spatially in 3D. We were also able to assist our client by hosting the scanning data online, allowing for virtual walkthroughs and ad-hoc measurements.
