Meaningful work
Finding meaning at work is what most strive to achieve and it is usually limited to do the following two things in most people beliefs.
Everyone doesn't get the work they love to do. Nor everyone works in a company that does some social good. Imagine you are working in a tobacco company, does it do any social good?
I have been fortunate to work in a couple of healthcare companies, where most of the people i met say the reason of joining the company is the purpose of helping patients and improve their health. This might be true for a senior executive who has met his/her lower hierarchy of needs in the Maslow's Pyramid, but for a person in the junior ranks there can be few other reasons which is not bad and still it gives them a meaning at work. The other reasons are listed below and all of them are legitimate.
3. Work bringing utilitarian value allowing to earn money which enables bringing food to the family, and family having a comfortable standard of living, provide your kids better education, pay off mortgage loans etc.
4. Work might be a stepping stone for achieving something big in your career.
5. Work allows you to hangout with people and build a friendship that you enjoy more than the task at work.
6. Work helps you achieve good craftmanship and develop the skills though it appears mundane.
All of the above reasons are taken from a research by INSEAD, Business School. There can be many more reasons and if anyone of you reading this have any other reason, please do share it.
