The Meaning Of Life

The Meaning Of Life

Make a difference one person at a time.?There, I wrote it—the meaning of life. It’s the essence that wafts between obsession and practicality, between chocolate and lettuce. It’s the thing that arises more often than not in conversations with colleagues and close friends.?Becker was right: “We do not fear death but rather death with insignificance.”?

As I walk corporate corridors or listen to zoom meetings, I hear the discontent and the longing. And when I hear how someone has noticed the difference a colleague made, I see the joy. ?

Sadly, our lives are so crammed, so hurried, and so “instant message’, we forget that what most of us are seeking is meaning. Why am I here? Does it matter at all??

Once upon a time, I thought that unless I “saved” thousands, wrote the greatest book, conquered cancer, fed the starving, or won the Noble Peace Prize, what good was I???

I am not going to do any of those things… not even come a teeny bit close. Finally, with what I suspect, is more than half of my life behind me, comes the realization that we are here to make a difference one person at a time.?

If I could capture all those people who made a difference to me, capture all their flaws and beauty, their ordinariness and extraordinariness, I’d feel a sense of relief.?They are my models for making a difference one person at a time.

Do you find yourself here with me??Rejoice then! We DO make a difference—one person at a time.

I too remember you from my NSA days. You were also an inspiration.

So well said rather than dreams of grandiosity we can get busy and visit a friend who's husband dies, send a picture of flowers to someone having a rough day, apologize for something we know we should not have said, know the names of the people who clean at the gym and use their name as we say thank you and try to avoid walking on a wet floor. Perhaps this is the real Oneness the mystics make so obsure.

Eileen, I remember being thrilled to sit at a table with you when you were on the NSA board. I think it was the chapter president’s camp. And I remember taking time to be that person for incoming Chapter Presidents when I was on the NSA board. You have led the way more often and in more ways than you know, one person at a time.
