The Meaning of Independence: Reflecting on Nationalism and Interdependence

As I stand in India, a country rich in history and culture, during its Independence Day celebrations, I am drawn to reflect deeply on the true meaning of independence. What does it really mean to be independent? Independence from what? As we mark this day, it's essential to explore the implications of independence, especially in the context of nationalism, a construct that has shaped the world for centuries but has also brought its share of issues and conflicts.
Nationalism: A Double-Edged Sword
Nationalism, one of humanity's major constructs, has been instrumental in the formation of nation-states, giving people a sense of identity and belonging. However, it has also been the root cause of many conflicts and divisions. National identity is often used to manipulate citizens, urging them to pay allegiance to a flag, a symbol, or a national ideal, with the implication that being part of one country is inherently better than being part of another. This sense of superiority, this us-versus-them mentality, has led to wars, colonization, and the marginalization of countless communities across the globe.
The world has been organized around countries, with borders drawn on maps that dictate where we belong and who we are. If you are not part of and loyal to one of these entities, you are often seen as an outsider, an anomaly in a system that thrives on division and exclusivity. Nationalism, while providing a sense of belonging, often excludes others, creating a fragmented world where unity is sacrificed at the altar of national pride.
Global Citizenship and Small Community Governance
In contrast to nationalism, my vision leans toward global citizenship—a concept that transcends borders and national identities. Global citizenship encourages us to see ourselves as part of a larger, interconnected world where our responsibilities extend beyond the confines of our countries. It advocates for small community governance—towns, villages, or cities—where people have a direct say in how they are governed, fostering a sense of belonging that is inclusive rather than exclusive.
This approach aligns with the principles of Happytalism, a philosophy that seeks to create a world of freedom, consciousness, and happiness for all. Happytalism emphasizes a sense of belonging that does not exclude others, advocating for systems that promote interdependence rather than isolation. It challenges the notion that allegiance to a nation should override our responsibility to the planet and to each other as human beings.
Transforming Independence Days into Interdependence Days
As we reflect on the meaning of independence, especially on days like today, I invite us to consider the pros and cons of nationalism. While it has played a crucial role in shaping modern societies, it has also contributed to division, conflict, and a narrow sense of belonging. What if, instead of celebrating independence as freedom from others, we transformed these days into celebrations of interdependence?
Interdependence Days would focus on the relationship between self, community, and nature. They would be an opportunity to reflect on how we can live in harmony with each other and the environment, recognizing that true freedom comes not from isolation but from connection. Interdependence emphasizes that our well-being is intrinsically linked to the well-being of others and the planet.
We are whole and complete
Independence is a powerful concept, but its true meaning goes beyond the boundaries of nations. As we celebrate independence, let's also consider the importance of interdependence—of fostering connections that unite rather than divide. By embracing global citizenship and small community governance, we can create a world where belonging does not exclude, and where freedom is found in our interconnectedness with all of life.
This Independence Day, let's reflect on how we can transform the narrative, moving from independence from others to interdependence with all.
