Many of us ask questions such as "Why am I here?", "What am I good at?" and "What is my purpose?" These, and other questions, are good and honorable. They help us to find a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world we live in. They guide us into a purposeful life, one that gives us more fulfillment. How much do these questions and explorations help us to discover meaning? That is my question and predicament. I have come across many individuals who know their purpose and talents, yet they seem unfulfilled. Others have a 8/10 when it comes to fulfillment in work and life, and yet meaning seems to be a dissent cousin. Is it possible to feel you're in the zone and still miss the meaning part?
But what is meaning? Why is it important? Meaning helps us to live for something greater that ourselves. Meaning can help us to find joy in the daily moments of life. Manfred Kets De Vries, in his book, Quo Vadis? makes it clear, that meaning is neither a luxury nor an automatic result. Meaning can only be experienced if designed intentionally. There are many aspects of meaning, 2 of which are discovering our purpose and talents, and yet we can be lacking in living a meaningful life.

For both individuals and organizations, living in pandemic times, and being confronted with existential realities and questions, the intentional design of meaning is what will bring life in the future. This is not a luxury, but a necessity, for individuals, families, businesses and societies. Viktor Frankl said "people do not die because of suffering, but because of suffering without meaning". Maybe the greatest life disappointment will be coming to the end of life, without having lived a meaningful life and lead a meaningful business. What are you doing to create a meaningful life and business?
