How many meals a day should we have?
Stress at work, many appointments and other commitments often make it difficult to eat regular meals. We all know the result only too well: We eat many small snacks throughout the day. There's always something in our desk drawer, either a granola bar, a bar of chocolate or a cookie - just in case, of course. With this constant snacking, however, we lose track of what we actually consume throughout the day.
Fixed meal times are abandoned, and the question arises as to whether this is important at all. After all, dietary recommendations have changed again and again throughout history: The Romans, for example, ate 4 to 5 meals. In the Middle Ages, people usually only ate one meal, and having occasional periods of fasting were considered as good manners. The aristocracy temporarily dispensed with breakfast in order to distinguish themselves from the common people. But as prosperity grew, the number of meals increased again - the usual meal rhythm changed from three meals back to five or six.
Eating regularly is a good timer
Today, nutrition experts agree that a regular eating schedule (3 meals a day) is a good conductor for the body’s circadian clock as it enables a continuous supply of nutrients and energy to the cells. So we are more efficient and concentrated and can better cope with the demands of the day. Furthermore, eating regularly can avoid cravings.

In addition, we now know that frequent eating between the main meals demands maximum performance from our metabolism and significantly disrupts the biorhythm. Our digestive system needs regular breaks from eating in order to digest the previous meal. In addition, the energy reserves are not used if we constantly take in new energy - if the carbohydrate stores are filled then excess energy is stored as fat in the tissues, liver and blood vessels.
Our body is not designed for food to be constantly consumed to have to be constantly digesting and metabolizing nutrients. The breaks between meals are vital for the body, so that all valuable components from the food can be absorbed and the indigestible remains can be excreted.
The nights should be reserved for the sole purpose of metabolizing substances and cleansing the body. Eating at night does more harm than good to the body, because it then has to use energy for digestion, energy that is no longer available for rest and repair processes.
What is your opinion about meal recommendations? Do you prefer 3 or rather 4-5 meals per day? I look forward to your comments!
