Meals on Wheels
When the country came to a stop as a result of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, I had the opportunity to serve the Dekalb county community the first six weeks of the shutdown. I provided meals for the elderly and home bound in my community twice a week. We met every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 AM to prepare the food. Then, we worked the rest of the day to deliver over 200 meals throughout the community. The "Meals on Wheels" program was created by Fort Payne First United Methodist Church because many stores and restaurants closed down in March 2020. We continued to serve meals until July 2020. We started a donation fund in August to continue the program while we left to go back to school.
Through this experience, I learned a lot of skills and made friendships that I will cherish to this day. To serve your community may be one of the most fulfilling and humbling experiences I have ever been a part of. The smiles on everyone's face when we would deliver meals brought so much joy during a tough and trying time. To not only serve my community, but to be a leader through service only highlighted the pride I have in my community and served to reinforce my commitment to continue to give back to my community in the future.
