Meal Prep Simplified

Meal Prep Simplified

You want to clean up your diet, eat healthily, reach your goals, and send your energy through the roof!

However, then it somehow goes wrong.

You either don’t get the results you want OR you end up with a bunch of uneaten food that you toss in the trash or both!

This likely leaves you feeling frustrated or it sure does for me — and waste a lot of your time and money.

Meal Prep Time Savers

You know that feeling when you have a project hanging over your head and you just can’t get it started…

But once you get it going, you wonder why you dreaded it so much?

Meal prepping can feel that exact same way!?

The thing is, once you get started, it can save you SO much time, money, and stress.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a quick list of meal prep time & money savers for you. Ready for them?

6 Meal Prep Time & Money Saving Tips

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t expect to become a meal prep pro overnight. Pick ONE meal that gives you the most stress – like lunch – and start making those meals ahead of time. Once you get into a routine with lunch, you can branch out into other meals.
  2. Double up on your meals. Just make extra when you cook dinner! It can easily turn into tomorrow’s lunch or dinner.
  3. Have a game plan. If you are planning to cook a few different dishes at the same time, read all of the recipes through, create a plan, and do as much chopping/rinsing/pre-prep ahead of time as possible. This will help keep you organized, allow you to clean up as you go (a huge time-saver), AND chances are… you’ll actually enjoy making your meal!
  4. Cook up bigger batches of protein-rich foods. This saves time and money. Think about it; it takes just as long to cook up 2 lbs worth of turkey burgers as it does 1 lb and buying in bulk usually results in a lower per-pound/gram cost!
  5. Use your rice cooker and/or slow cooker. Both are inexpensive “set it and forget it” cookers that will save time and effort – and they both make delicious food!
  6. Make it fun. Listen to your favorite music or podcast, or download an audiobook to keep you company while you get busy in the kitchen.

Those tips should help make your next meal prep session a breeze.

7 Biggest Meal Prep Mistakes

I put together this list of mistakes people make so you can avoid them.

  1. Making food you don’t enjoy. Newsflash; you should actually LIKE the meals you’re planning and cooking! I know this seems like a no-brainer but if you hate ground turkey, broccoli, or eggs, don’t include them in your meal prep.
  2. “Winging” it. You need a game plan for your meals before you go grocery shopping. Take a few minutes to sit down and plan your meals and snacks for the week ahead, and then check your pantry & refrigerator to make sure you have everything you need.
  3. Not balancing your meals. Make sure you’re getting enough protein, healthy fats, and carbs to meet your goals.?(FYI I can help you with this.)
  4. Not eating enough fruits & veggies. The recommended amount is 5 servings (2 fruit, 3 vegs) a day.
  5. Not prepping snacks. This is a big one. Plan for snacks AHEAD of time so you don’t have to tap into your willpower when hunger strikes!
  6. Making TOO much food. Most of the food you make will only keep for a few days in the fridge. If you know you won’t be able to eat it all in time, freeze it as soon as possible after cooking for ultimate freshness and taste. If you are one of those people who rarely ever eats the food you freeze…cut back on how much you prep :-)
  7. Prepping only 1x a week. Most people who prep their food on the weekend run out of food by Thursday or Friday. Plan ahead with a mini mid-week meal prep session to tide you over.

The common theme among all those mistakes? Planning!

Meal prepping and planning ahead has become quite important to me especially when I travel abroad. Airport food is seldom a good option but I’m always happy when I can take my own home cooked meals that help me stay on track with my goals - my biggest tip is always make double portions of food which you can keep as left overs for your prepped meals.
