Meal Etiquette

Chapter XXXVI, Enchiridion.

As the proposition, “either it is day or it is night,” has much force in a disjunctive (lack of consistency)argument, but none at all in a conjunctive one, so, at a feast, to choose the largest share is very suitable to the bodily appetite, but utterly inconsistent with the social spirit of the entertainment. Remember, then, when you eat with another, not only the value to the body of those things which are set before you, but also the value of proper courtesy toward your host.

Thoughts

a. Black and white thinking, provides clarity when the argument is inconsistent. However this approach does not hold and will not find a solution when the argument is coherent.

b.Be mindful of not being greedy especially when sharing an entertainment or a meal.

c. Be mindful of being respectful and mannerly to your host and the occasion.

d. Have appreciation and gratitude for the meal proffered.
