MEACA's "The Ethical Explorer"

MEACA's "The Ethical Explorer"

The new year just begun, and we hope you all had some wonderful holidays and a good start into the new year. To start the year right, please find the latest edition of our Middle East & Africa Compliance Association "The Ethical Explorer".

?

Lets start the newsletter with a recap of the December 2023.

Beginning of December the networking event organised by Descartes Systems Group and Middle East & Africa Compliance Association took place at the First Collection hotel in Business Bay. Shahab Wahdatehagh gave an introduction into the services Descartes Systems Group is offering, including a very interesting presentation about Trade Compliance in the Middle East.

Thank you to everyone who were able to join.

?

Furthermore, Richard Bistrong once again was in town as part of a company event. This was a great opportunity to organise a dinner between Richard Bistrong , the MEACA board and its memebers. Plenty people joind and subject of the evening was the unique skills/mindset each person posses and from which other Compliance professional can benefit.

Another highlight of the evening was the introduction of Elvis Angyiembe book “Dream and Take Actions or Die Dreaming: A LONG WAY FROM NGWO” which describes his own journey. Highly recommended to everyone to order a copy for him/herself.

It was really a pleasure to see so many MEACA members joining the dinner.

The Ethics Corner

Under the subcategory "The Ethics Corner" we provide you with interesting articles/stories from our members.

This month we are pleased to share the short biography of one of our member, Sarah El Husseini .

Sarah joined MEACA after her recent move to the Middle-East from the UK.?

After graduating from law school in the UK and working for international law firms in London, Sarah decided to pursue a compliance career within the financial services industry and worked for Citibank, HSBC and Société Generale in Canary Wharf, London.?

She has 14 years experience within the compliance world, with a specialism in financial crime and sanctions. In September 2022, Sarah moved to Qatar to head up the compliance function for UBS Swiss Bank and have enjoyed learning more about the Middle-Eastern business world and culture.?

The best piece of advice Sarah would give to a budding compliance officer is to remain curious and understand the bigger picture behind the laws and regulations. Compliance is not just about ensuring your firm is applying the regulations, but also has a wider impact on society and the economy as a whole. It is this, specifically, that initially encouraged ?her to build a compliance career and keeps her feeling engaged and fulfilled at work, on a daily basis.?

?A fun fact about Sarah: Her claim to fame is that she met Prince Harry and arranged for him to visit her school to play Rugby with their junior team!

Also in 2024 we continue with the articles wirtten by Dr. Bruce Weinstein, The Ethics Guy?. In this month version he would like to know if you are able to find out which Section Of This Article Was Written By An AI Chatbot .

Artificial intelligence can enrich our lives or present trouble. Consider, for example, how AI can deepen our understanding of ethics, the study of conduct and character.

I asked a popular new AI chatbot,ChatGPT, “In 200 words or less, what are three things that get in the way of doing the right thing?” I also answered the question myself. Here are the results. See if you can guess which one the AI program wrote.

Please find all statements here.

?It is not easy to distinguish, let us know if you are able to find out which one was written by ChatGPT and which by Dr. Bruce Weinstein.
