ME TIME..

ME TIME..

DAY FIVE:EDWARD MUNGAI MUSINGS:ME TIME

Today, I want to share a habit which I think is a great one for humanities and that I have tried to follow especially during this fellowship period……. The habit of “me time”. “Me time” is time that you spend relaxing and doing things that you enjoy rather than time spent doing things for other people. One of the thing that I think we should do more is to reflect during the “me time”, kind of a getting some 20 minutes every day and writing in a journal on what is going through your life, looking into the gratitude’s that you have, think about the future, thinking about the things that did not go well and what lessons are coming out of it. This habit according to Robin Sharma, whom by now you should know is my hero will increase your happiness and productivity by 100X. This could also be during the exercise time……. But why does this matter?

1. First and foremost, it makes you review what you did and identify the successes as well as the mistakes that you made. The key is always to go back and look at what worked well and what did not and learning from the experience. This process makes us better.

2. Secondly, reflection time delivers great ideas. If we are deliberate on creating “me time”, most of the best ideas that we will ever have in our lives will come from “me time”. During the fellowship we have been encouraged to have the time to reflect on what is happening and this will definitely bring in the bonuses in terms of the sharpness of our projects. The bonus will be in the form of hundreds if not thousands of great ideas from reflection.

3. Giving is also a big part of this business of “me time” …. reflections help you help others. As one reflect, there is a possibility of bumping in some thoughts on ways how to help other. Big part of life is about giving and our thoughts will always be focused on how we should help……. A good way of life at least in theory. If we put more into the reflection time it will be a better world of giving

4. By counting our blessing and lessons presented by your actions mainly through the process of reflecting we emerge happier than before. It is real that “me time” will make us happier. For instance, if you reflect on the things you did right and on your successes, this will allow you to celebrate every little success. It allows you to realize how much you’ve done right; the good things you’ve done in your life. Without reflection, it’s too easy to forget these things, and focus instead on our failures and hence sadness and depression!

5. Most of us are living without a perspective. By having a “me time” you create a perspective as you avoid being in the busy-ness of our daily lives. A mistake or a high-pressure project or something like that can seem like it means all the world. It can overwhelm us sometimes. But if we take some time to step back, and reflect on these problems, and how in the grand scheme of things they don’t mean all that much, it can calm us down and lower our stress levels. We gain perspective and we conquer the world.

Edward -- It's great to read your thoughts and perspectives. We often think that we've to fill our schedules with million things to feel a sense of accomplishment, while it could be more productive to reflect and then push forward. In Lean product development, there is a simple but powerful process which is: Plan - Do - Check - Act. Thank you for sharing!
