There is plenty of research now that highlights the detrimental effects of stress in our life. But it’s prolonged stress that causes the damage. The constant rush of adrenaline and emergency chemicals put the brain and body on high alert draining it of vital resources.
Before you panic, let’s put this into perspective. We are all built for short-term stress. We all come pre-packaged with the primitive system called the fight or flight nervous system. In a stressful situation, the body knows instantaneously to increase our heart rate so there is an increased blood flow to the arms and legs so we can run. Lung capacity and breathing increases, the adrenal glands produce a rush of adrenaline while the reproductive and digestive systems are momentarily downregulated to conserve energy.
In primitive times the hunt or chase could be short lived and the body would return to homeostasis bringing all systems back into balance in minutes allowing the hunter to enjoy the rewards of the stressful event.
Fast forward to the 21st century and this is no longer the case. Our stress now lasts 24hrs a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in some cases, year after year. By continually thinking about the bad boss, bad relationship, and lack of abundance in our lives we trigger the emotions of sadness, guilt, and hopelessness. Do this for long periods of time and it will become a habit.

When the body is in this constant survival mode the adrenal glands become depleted and cortisol levels can become elevated leading to serious issues. An oversupply of cortisol can suppress the immune system, increase blood pressure and sugar levels, decrease libido, produce acne and contribute to obesity.
The long-term effects of living in stress and emergency mode is a deregulation of genes that results in a breaking down of critical bodily resources.
