Me and My Shadow

  • "The cave you dare not enter holds the treasure that you seek," wrote mythologist Joseph Campbell. Myths have been around for eons and yet most of us seem to think of them as pretty little ditties that have little to do with realities. I studied Latin and Greek in college and it was the myths that taught me more about possibilities that were more cogent than what many of us had come to believe were not real. In dealing with clients the concept of the Shadow, the nature of the other--the man within the woman and the feminine within the man--is a concept purported by Carl Jung to free us. The invisible Partner inside us can make us more whole and happier that oftentimes a relationship with someone outside us never can or could. Yesterday I began to work with a good ole boy from the South who lapped up the notion of Shadow as if his life depended upon it--because it does. His wife was totally comfortable with her dark side the moment we broached the subject. But isn't that the case--women always seem to take the lead to concepts and ideas that heal us? Could your understanding and integration with your Shadow be the bridge over troubles waters? Just asking
