MDO Signs Strategic Mining Concession with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals to Unlock Key Resources in Al Wusta


Minerals Development Oman (MDO) has signed a pivotal mining concession agreement with the @Ministry of Energy and Minerals to explore and produce strategic minerals within the Al Wusta Governorate. Spanning 2,156 square kilometers, this concession area holds significant mineral deposits, including silica, limestone, and dolomite—all critical resources for Oman’s industrial sector and beyond.

Forecasts indicate the GCC silica sand market will reach $513.5 million by 2027, underscoring the rising demand for high-quality silica. MDO’s strategic project is positioned to meet both local and regional market needs, diversifying the company’s minerals portfolio while contributing meaningfully to Oman’s industrial growth.

In line with Oman’s sustainable development goals, this initiative aims to unlock the country’s untapped mineral wealth and generate economic opportunities. The project will focus on attracting investments, creating job opportunities, and driving sustainable development. It includes targeted efforts such as:

  • Training local Omanis and building industry-specific expertise,
  • Engaging local suppliers for transportation, construction, and logistics,
  • Aligning with Omanisation targets to increase local employment and foster community growth.


MDO aspires to upscale the national mining caders

CEO Nasser Al Maqbali emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating: "This agreement underscores MDO's commitment to unlocking Oman’s mineral wealth, creating investment opportunities, and driving sustainable industrial development. Through the F51 concession, both the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and MDO express their shared confidence in the project’s long-term viability and robust commercial potential."

With this latest agreement, MDO’s total concession area now spans 24,119 square kilometers, reinforcing the company’s role in supporting Oman’s economic diversification, advancing the energy transition, and fostering local community growth through responsible mining practices.

This strategic partnership marks a new chapter in MDO’s mission to leverage Oman’s natural resources for a prosperous and sustainable future.
