MDA Receives Grant to Preserve Oral History of Black Farmers

The MDA is helping preserve the history of the state’s Black farmers. The Minnesota Historical Society has awarded a $10,000 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant to the department for a project entitled “Black Farmers in Minnesota: Oral History.” The MDA applied for the grant last fall and was notified of the award Friday.

“We want to thank The Minnesota Historical Society and Cultural Heritage Program for this great honor. We are very excited to now be able to capture stories of emerging farmers at the turn of the century and where we are today,” said Assistant Commissioner Patrice Bailey.

The Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants program — also known as Legacy Grants — is a competitive process created to provide financial support for projects focused on preserving Minnesota’s history and culture.
