MCU Announcements and Marvel Updates from SDCC 2022

During SDCC 2022,?Marvel?welcomed us to the Multiverse Saga. Only three years ago, Kevin Feige announced the MCU Phase 4 in Hall H. Now, last weekend in San Diego, the president of?Marvel Studios returned to introduce us to Phase 5.

So, what does that include? Join us below as we break down the final Phase 4 Marvel projects, as well as give you all the info and release dates (that we know) for the next films and series — including a couple of exciting projects from Phase 6!

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law - Release date: August 17, 2022

We’ve all been missing our weekly Marvel show since the?Ms. Marvel?finale on July 13. But we don’t have to wait much longer! During SDCC, we got a brand new trailer.?She-Hulk: Attorney at Law?premieres on Disney+ this August — that’s less than a month away. This legal comedy follows?Jennifer Walters?as she navigates her new gamma-given powers, her job as a lawyer, and her super hero training with her cousin?Bruce Banner. The show will consist of nine episodes. Expect plenty of laughs and?fourth wall breaks, plus at least one much-anticipated cameo!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - Release date: November 11, 2022

The 30th film in the canon Marvel Cinematic Universe,?Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?will conclude Phase 4.?Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?deals with the aftermath of?T’Challa’s?death, as well as the encroaching threat of the Atlantean called Namor (Tenoch Huerta). Also joining the cast are Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, Michaela Coel as Aneka, Mabel Cadena as Namora, and Alex Livinalli as Attuma. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - Release date: February 17, 2023

We already met one version of the nefarious Kang the Conquerer in?Loki?season 1. Well, he’s back to cause trouble for a different set of heroes in?Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The third?Ant-Man?film takes us on an extended journey into the Quantum Realm. Scott Lang,?Hope Van Dyne, Cassie Lang, Janet Van Dyne, and Hank Pym all get trapped in that dangerous dimension under mysterious circumstances. Could Kang be the cause? Or is he simply passing through? Footage was shown in Hall H, but hasn’t been released online yet, so all we can do right now is guess.

Secret Invasion - Release date: Spring 2023

Booked as a gritty political thriller — perhaps tonally similar to?Captain America: The Winter Soldier?—?Secret Invasion?deals with a huge Skrull infiltration on planet Earth. This was teased in?Captain Marvel?and?Spider-Man: Far From Home, but now our protagonists actually have to figure it all out … or face the consequences.

Maria Hill, Nick Fury, and Talos will all return as the main players. Additional cast members include Don Cheadle as?James Rhodes?and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. MCU newcomers Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Coleman, and Emilia Clarke were shown in Hall H teasers, but their identities are still as secret as this alien invasion.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - Release date: May 5, 2023

Guardians of the Galaxy?Vol. 3?is the last in the?Guardians of the Galaxy?series. This film will dive into some of?the Guardians’ as-yet unexplored backstories, chiefly?Rocket Raccoon’s. Of course, last we saw these space-traveling misfit desperados, they were saying farewell to?Thor?in?Thor: Love and Thunder. Now they’re off on some deeper, soul-searching adventures. And while nothing is confirmed, we have to hope that?Star-Lord?will be off looking for his lost love, the timeline-displaced?Gamora.

Echo - Release date: Summer 2023

Echo was introduced in the Disney+ television series?Hawkeye. Initially an antagonist, Maya Lopez works for and with Kingpin, who treats her like his own daughter. After it’s revealed that Kingpin killed her father, however, Maya feels lost.?Echo?will likely explore her attempts to create her own enterprise and separate her name from Kingpin’s. Whether she’ll be good or bad, we just don’t know. Devery Jacobs will also join the series in an undisclosed role.

Loki?Season 2 - Release date: Summer 2023

The?Loki?finale told us this was coming — through both a cliffhanger and an end-credits message. But we finally have a premiere date! Ish.?Loki?season 2 is coming to Disney+ in summer 2023. Based on the first season’s ending, we know Loki has a lot to fix in terms of Kang’s control over the TVA and the Multiverse. What we don’t know is how Loki’s own dealings with the major MCU villain will be impacted by films like?Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,?where Kang will also feature prominently.

Blade - Release date: November 3, 2023

Mahershala Ali stars as Blade the vampire hunter, daywalker, and all around badass. We don’t have any new footage or casting announcements. However, the film is still on track to release in 2023 — the last Marvel movie premiering that year, actually.

Ironheart - Release date: Fall 2023

Riri Williams AKA Ironheart — yes, the name is inspired by?Iron Man?— will make her MCU debut in?Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Following that film, she’ll have her own Disney+ series. Chances are it takes place after the events of?Black Panther 2, but you never know. Keep a look out for more updates in November and December of this year.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos - Release date: Winter 2023/24

It was Agatha all along! The breakout villain of?WandaVision?was the charismatic and conniving Agatha Harkness, a sorceress who covets the?Scarlet Witch’s?chaos magic. Originally titled?Agatha: House of Harkness, this spinoff is a bit of a mystery considering Agatha is presumably still stuck in Westview. Will we be going back in time before the hex? Or has she somehow been released? Time and (eventually) Marvel will tell.

Daredevil: Born Again - Release date: Spring 2024

Now this one had fans falling to their knees. For those who might be unaware, Netflix’s?Defenders-based series were really the first Marvel television shows to gain major mainstream attention.?Daredevil?paved the road for every Disney+ show you now know and love. So this is a huge deal. While the title implies a complete reboot — plus ties nicely into Matt Murdock’s religious background — we can’t say for sure how Marvel will deal with incorporating these older Netflix series into the MCU.

It is confirmed, however, that Charlie Cox will reprise his role as Daredevil for the impressive 18-episode first season. He already showed up in?Spider-Man: No Way Home?and will make guest appearances in?She-Hulk?and?Echo. Additionally, Vincent D’Onofrio will cast surely his signature shadow across Hell’s Kitchen as Kingpin, having already returned to the MCU in?Hawkeye.

Captain America: New World Order - Release date: May 3, 2024

Sam Wilson?is?Captain America. He’s not backing down from the shield — or from a fight. We don’t have any details about?Captain America: New World Order?other than the film will be the first solo Cap adventure for Sam. The title is incredibly foreboding. Is it Sam’s new world? Or that of his enemies? We can conjecture that?John Walker?— U.S. Agent — might play a role if he remains Sam and?Bucky’s?primary antagonist. But a whole lot can change in the MCU in two years, so no theory is solid at this point!

Thunderbolts - Release date: July 25, 2024

Formed by Baron Zemo, the Thunderbolts are an antihero team comprised of characters like Atlas, Songbird, Cyclone, and others — primarily unknown individuals. Of course, the Thunderbolts roster has changed over the years in Marvel comics. The more famous members include?Green Goblin, Bullseye,?Taskmaster, and?Elektra.

Over the years, however, the roster has also included Hawkeye, Spectrum, Luke Cage, and even?Deadpool. Thus we can’t say for certain which characters will join the team, or even who will lead them. Marvel Studios gave no casting information at SDCC. So keep those wild guesses coming, just for fun!

Fantastic 4 - Release date: November 8, 2024

We’ve had a couple different cinematic iterations of the Fantastic Four over the years. Marvel’s First Family, composed of?Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman,?Human Torch, and?The Thing, is a beloved and classic team. And it’s finally time to bring them into the MCU proper — especially after the alternate universe Mr. Fantastic who perished rather horribly in?Doctor Strange?in the Multiverse of Madness.

No cast members have been announced at this time for this Phase 6 film. We’re not even sure if John Krasinski will be Mr. Fantastic again. In any case, we’re hoping for a group with incredible chemistry … plus a diabolical?Doctor Doom?to try to tear them apart!

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty - Release date: May 2, 2025

After?Thanos?in the Infinity Saga, Kang seems to be the primary villain in our Multiverse Saga. So?Avengers: The Kang Dynasty?could very well be the?Avengers: Infinity War?of Phases 5 and 6 — that is, a penultimate culmination film of some sort. Both the title and its placement in the MCU release lineup suggest as such. Of course, there’s no other news right now to confirm or deny our suspicions.

However, we’re also looking at this from a Young Avengers perspective. Kang is a major player in the Young Avengers’ stories, and right now we have most of the team already in the MCU. Could this be Marvel’s way of pushing these teen heroes to the forefront? Will we get?The Children’s Crusade? We just don’t know, but that makes wondering even more enjoyable.

Avengers: Secret Wars - Release date: November 7, 2025

If?Kang Dynasty?is?Infinity War,?Secret Wars?is?Endgame. In the comics,?Secret Wars?is a crossover event among all the major teams and characters of the Multiverse. There have been two major?Secret Wars?events, the first one beginning in 1984 and the second in 2015.

Back in the ’80s, Marvel comics introduced the Beyonder, a powerful cosmic entity who plucked various super heroes and super-villains from Earth and placed them onto his “Battleworld,” where they were forced to fight each other. The main players included familiar names from the?Avengers, the?Fantastic Four, and?Spider-Man’s?web of characters, as well as the?X-Men.

Later, in 2015, Jonathan Hickman wrote a new Secret Wars event in which Incursions are causing the Marvel Multiverse to collapse. When only two universes remain, help must come from an unlikely source:?Doctor Doom. In the aftermath, our heroes and their enemies must contend with a new reality called Battleworld. A lot happens there. Ultimately, however, both?Secret Wars?essentially reset Marvel comics. Will this film function the same way for the MCU?
